Taxis likely to be exempted from speed governors

PANJIM: The Centre is likely to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules that would not mandate installation of speed governors for taxis.

If the Rules are amended, it would give respite to taxi operators.

Transport Minister Ramkrishna Dhavlikar, currently in Delhi, has said that his ministry is likely to make the changes.

The Union government had earlier this year expressed its intention to revoke the mandatory requirement of speed governors for commercial vehicles, imposed last year.

A speed governor is installed in a vehicle to bring its maximum speed down to 80 km per hour. In May 2017, the government made it mandatory for all commercial vehicles to have speed governors.

The taxi operators in Goa are opposed to the installation of speed governors.
