PANJIM: A 21-year-old pillion rider met a watery grave in the River Mandovi after he was thrown off the scooter in a head-on collision with a car along the Ribandar causeway on Monday afternoon.

The tragedy occurred at around 3 pm when the WagonR car (GA-05-B-5090), driven by Sunil Fadte (55) was proceeding from Marcel to Panjim via Ribandar while rider of Maestro scooter (GA-07-Y-3899) one Suraj Naik (30) along with the pillion rider Rohan Parab (21) was proceeding from Panjim to Ribandar.

The Old Goa police informed that the car crossed into the wrong lane when the driver tried to overtake another vehicle and crashed into the oncoming scooter.

The impact was such that the Rohan was thrown off the scooter and landed into the river and got drowned. The rider Suraj sustained injuries after falling off the scooter. “The water level was high and there were light showers at the time of the accident... The fire-fighters were summoned to conduct the rescue operation. Rohan’s body was fished out after nearly an hour’s search,” a police official told Herald. Both Suraj and Rohan were reportedly on their way back home at PDA Colony in Corlim.

Prima facie, the WagonR was found to be on the wrong side and as such the Old Goa police arrested the 55-year-old Marcel resident under Section 304-A for causing death by negligence and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

“The driver is found to have violated the traffic rules which led to the fatal accident. We are nevertheless examining the case details,” the official said adding that the Suraj is undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim. Suraj’s statement will be recorded once he is medically fit, the official said.

This is the second incident in the last two days wherein a pillion rider died in an accident. On Sunday evening, a 70-year-old woman died when a truck driver rammed into the bike at KTC Circle, Panjim. Rider Deepa Gawas sustained injuries while Tulsi Kurtikar succumbed. The driver Ramesh Naik was arrested soon thereafter.
