Who is to be blamed for bad Gogol, Davorlim roads?

Bad roads in Gogol and Davorlim display shoddy works and use of substandard material

MARGAO: How do the roads tarred just months ago give away in just one rainy season? This is a question no one has been able to answer for quite some time now.

It may be noted that the road towards Gogol Housing board was tarred barely a few months ago, bringing brief relief.

However, to their utter dismay the road has developed many big potholes and has got washed off in some places.

The work of tarring the main and internal road had been tendered at a whopping cost of Rs 3.50 crore, but the joy of tax-paying people was short-lived, as the roads have turned into a nightmare in just one rainy season.

Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, along with the local councillors had inaugurated the work at Rs 3.50 crore, with Rs 1.50 crore added thereafter.

However, after a pipe burst at the Gogol junction, the water accumulated on the road easily wore off the thinly-laid tar layer and people now have to struggle to on these roads.

Sadly, no one seems to care; even though crores of rupees have been pumped in, there is lack of quality and accountability on the work undertaken.

The lack of coordination has resulted in the road getting battered with digging for electrical underground cabling, sewerage works, domestic water pipelines and what remained got washed off easily.

Similar is the case with the condition of the Rawanfond-Davorlim Konkan Railway road and also the road on the small over-bridge at Ravanfond. Every petty and haphazard road repair work has been washed away and no concrete efforts have been initiated to it worthy of travel.

To make matters worse, the PWD decided to patch up these potholes and dumped massive debris and construction waste in the potholes, making the roads very dangerous for two-wheeler and motorists alike.

A taxi owner from Margao, Gaurish Naik said the main reason for vehicle to breakdown is the poor condition of roads. As a taxi owner I have to spend over Rs 1 lakh every year on the repairs of my vehicle, due to these small patches of bad roads. The PWD is expected to be quick on getting the roads in good condition which they fail to do, he said.

Presently even the road at Old Market Circle has developed big bumps and large tar protrusions, big enough to cause serious accidents.
