ALDONA: A group of 23 youth cleared the garbage along the stretch of road between Moira bridge and Bastora-Mapusa junction and collected 30 bags of waste, on Sunday.

Earlier, on three occasions this stretch was cleared of garbage by the youth from Moira, Aldona, Ucassiam and Nachinola.

The stretch of road cleared by the youth on Sunday is a major route to Moira, Nachinola, Aldona, Bicholim and Poira.

Moira local Siddhesh Kesarkar, a physical education director working in a college at Margao and who was part of the group, said that “the youth have realised that we need to be part of the solution and not the pollution.”

“Although this area does not come under our Moira Panchayat we still made it a point to collectively clean it. This is not a garbage dumping site and when one person dumps garbage others also tend to throw their waste. It’s a request to the passersby not dump their garbage here,” Kesarkar said.

The collected garbage was later handed over to Bastora Panchayat. The cleanliness drive was the initiative of Yuva Shakti Cultural Association, Nachinola.
