From his ‘Força Goa’ anthem to the previous recording he has
put together, Varun Carvalho has become a common name on the musical circuit.
However, this wasn’t his natural course of progression. Starting out purely as
a dentist, he shares his academic journey, saying, “Having studied in a few
colleges in India, I completed my bachelor of Dental Surgery within the country
at SDM Dental College in Dharwad in 2002. However, I decided to educate myself
further and finished my education from the Guys, Kings and Thomas in the United
Kingdom in the year 2002. My favourite teacher was Prof Hurst.”
However, this student of medicine realised that there was a
void he needed to fill, a gap of sorts that could only be sated by music. “I
wanted to contribute to the medical field while being creative at the same time
and dentistry gave me the outlet to do it. I would like to think that I’ve been
creating smiles ever since. Moving into music was, I think, a natural
progression. I always used to compose music, but a few years ago I took it up
seriously and got into producing my own songs. I put a band together and our
music began evolving. Today, I honestly cannot think of a life without music.
It is everywhere I go and a huge part of whatever I do. Everything I see around
me inspires me to write a song.”

Varun’s journey is one that is indicative of how it is not
necessarily about focusing on one calling and how career satisfaction can come
in many ways, plenty of which are sometimes unforeseeable. “Life is all about
retaining a balance and I try to strike this balance between both my passions:
dentistry and music. I am lucky in that aspect; I love what I do. Whether I am
giving my patient a new smile or performing with my band at a music festival,
both give me immense joy and happiness and I try and transmit these emotions to
my patients and my fans. There is a feeling of purpose of having achieved
something in life when someone comes up to you and says that your song has made
a difference to their life or when one of your patients sports a really happy
smile. Life is really good now and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Life is
truly beautiful.”
