Mushkan Shaikh wants a return to normalcy. She is a staff member at the Goa International Airport. She said, “I hope the omicron variant of Covid-19 doesn’t cause any severe damage to us. Last year, exactly at this time I wished that a second wave would not come but that never happened.” She added that if everything would turn normal she would be able to focus more on her job and would be able to give her best learning new things. She joined her duty during the lockdown, so she wishes to get more and more on field experiences with least restrictions and more normalcy.
There are a lot of tourists coming from different corners of the country; one of them being Rajesh Singh. He is a businessman and has almost 250 employees working under him. He said, “I look at this year as an opportunity to have fun and spread happiness among all. I really wish that my staff would be happy in the field of their work, which in turn would help in the growth of the company.” At the same time he added that, for his personal life he has spent 40 years of his life working and earning money now he wants to enjoy life with his family. He wants to go on more vacations and also follow his hobby with joy.

Robin D’souza owns a bakery in one of the villages of Goa. He is really passionate about his work and said, “I want this year to be just like 2019. The reason I am saying this is because it was fun to bake overnight. I along with my workers used to work full night, so, that the ‘Poders’ could get the bread on time.” He added that, over the last two years bread consumption decreased and they were even facing labour issues, which was in turn delaying the entire production. That is causing stress to both the worker and himself.
Quite a few people are also seeing this year as the chance to relax and sharpen their skills. Siddeshwar Naik, a resident of Cucolim said, “I have been working in Bangalore for the last one year. The job schedule was a normal nine to four, but the pace at which the work was done was intense. It seemed like life there was very fast and I hardly got time to talk to my own family members or friends.” He further said that he was not ready for such a setup and would need more time to reach there and manage it. So he decided to return to Goa and work for a while, which would give him more comfort and peace of mind. He sees this year as an opportunity to learn and manage things more carefully and maturely with having fun.
There were a few kids who were confused as to how they wanted to spend this year. Mahesh Dessai, he said, “I want my school to open only for the classes and the exams should be conducted in online mode. I miss not going to school but at the same time I am really scared of the exams, especially maths and science.” He added that he would love to go out of his house to play with his friends and learn from his peers but he also showed his sense of confusion by saying he would not be able to handle the strictness of the school.
With the New Year commencing, everyone has something to accomplish and achieve. One can only hope this year will be marked by progress and development, marking a turn from the course taken over the last two years.
