Its shades of green, white and red! Christmas could not get more glitzy or decorative than the Casa J D Fernandes basement shop at Panjim stocked to the nines for the coming season of advent. Darlene Fernandes who has been handling this section of the family business is enthusiastic about the collection this year. “Every year the demand is increasing. For the past four years we have been holding special Christmas sales in the basement for this reason,” explains Darlene who commences sales as early as the first week of November.
Ensuring that there is something for every customer, Darlene brings a variety of items to fit every budget and choice. “My items come in from Thailand and China. The Chinesegoods are cheaper and prices range from Rs. 30 to Rs.10,500,” she affirms. The bulk of her shoppers she reveals are Britons, residing in Goa as well as locals, whose demand for a variety of decor has been growing over the years.
Linen has been a new inclusion in the
decor for the coming season, but the pièces
de résistance are the beautifully imprinted
cloth mesh rolls for the Christmas tree. Other
additions are the paper rolls; decorated
runners for pelmets; varieties of poinsettias;
varieties of snowflakes that range from the
tiny to the very large; mistletoe and wreaths.
Stars ranging from the Chinese press-button
variety to the Indian string tied and special
home-made stars as well as illuminated iron
rod stars; smokeless candles; hand bands with
light; water-proof LED lights with adaptor;
white stickers for shop windows and fibreglass
