This young woman of today is different, not like her mother or her grandmother for sure. More assertive and willing to walk the path that is less travelled. Lakshada Shirodkar recently won a gold medal in the Goa University inter college championship. She is also a student of law who is very interested in criminal law, the 19 year old intends to make her career as a criminal lawyer. She seems very clear headed and motivated in reaching her goal.
The young lady is also a champion power-lifter. It is a niche sport and is generally associated with the male gender. But Lakshada seems to be determined to make her mark as a young woman despite the hurdles that life has placed in her path.
Living in Pajifond, Margao with her mother Sujata and younger brother, Samarth. Lakshada lost her father Sanjay in 2014 and the three members of the family are pretty close. As a young girl, she was very thin which was a source of concern to her and her family. She decided to do something that is not the norm. Goaded by a friend, she decided to visit the local gym to work on her body. She decided to work on her muscles to get strong and to build her stamina and her appetite. When she started she was the only girl in the gym and that did not phase her a bit. She would visit the gym every day to exercise in the morning. The morning was of course spent in the college studying the intricacies of criminal law. The second year student at VVM’s Govind Ramnath Kare Law College is very motivated saying she enjoyed learning more about criminals which was full of colour and drama.
Her time in the gym started paying off and she was advised to take up powerlifting as a hobby. In her first competition, which by the way was the Nationals held in Chhattisgarh in 2023 she won two medals one in the 52 kg and the second one as the strongest teen. Lakshada said, “My family is happy with what I am doing. My mother does not know the intricacies of the sport but she is happy with what I am achieving and my brother is very happy and is very encouraging”
Lakshada said there were more girls now in the gym exercising everyday just like her. The two hours she spent at the gym everyday was the most satisfying time for her. The entire exercise of practising and participating in competitions was very good for her. It has made her a very confident person who can hold her own in front of others without any problems. That she asserted was the biggest gain for her.
Going to the gym will be a constant in her life as she adds colour in her life being a criminal lawyer. She intends to keep time aside to go to the gym every day. That will certainly need a legal brain to work out the modalities of balancing a day to the satisfaction of everyone.
