Celebrate oneness; eradicate stigma on mental illness

October 10 is observed as World Mental Health Day in order to spread awareness about various issues concerning mental health and also with the aim of destigmatising the need for psychiatric help

On World Mental Health Day, thousands of supporters come together to celebrate the annual awareness programme that brings attention to mental illness and its major effects on the lives of people worldwide. The day, supported by the United Nations (UN), is held annually on October 10 to raise public awareness about mental health issues worldwide. This event promotes open discussions on illnesses, as well as investments in prevention and treatment services.    Commenting on the stigma attached to visiting a psychiatrist in this day and age, Donna Noronha, PR for the COOJ Mental Health Foundation, says, “This notion is only perceived in a country like India. In America, you will notice that many people visit psychiatrists for counselling sessions. In India, even students hesitate in seeking counselling and attending sessions.” “It has also been seen that when people come across others who are suffering from some mental illness, rather than extending a helping hand, the label them as ‘piso’ or ‘aauto’, and treat them as outcasts. The fear of being labelled stops these people from seeking medical help. But when not addressed properly and timely, these mental issues can escalate and even lead to suicide,” she adds. To bring about a change, awareness is necessary. Such a ambiance should be created that those suffering should feel comfortable to open up about their problems. “It is very difficult to bring in change, but not impossible. The mentality to look at this problem has to be changed,” says Donna.  She continues, “We have got clients who have been rehabilitated. So, for every problem, there is a solution. We have rehabilitated the clients suffering from schizophrenia, personality disorders, addiction, etc. We teach them how to perform on a daily basis; how life can be normal with a little effort. How to develop cognitive skills; some may act mentally ill, but they still may possess different hidden talents that need to be nurtured. Through our vocational programme, we work on developing these talents which can then be used to earn a living.”      The prevention of mental and emotional disorders, the proper treatment and care of those with such disorders, and the promotion of mental health are the programmes that needs to be discussed. The World Federation for Mental Health’s broad and diverse membership makes possible a collaboration among governments and non-governmental organisations to advance the cause of mental health services, research, and policy advocacy worldwide. Every member of the general public needs to step forward and join the movement to spread awareness about mental health issues and give out the message that it is okay to ask for help.
