Beyond
Borders, an art and photography exhibition by Cecilia and Melinda Viegas was inaugurated by MLA
Alina Saldanha, at the Art Gallery in Kala Academy recently. The exhibition was
held to commemorate the first anniversary of the Viegas family’s Overland Trip
from Goa to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysiain order to share this once-in-a-lifetime
experience through paintings and photographs as well as to support and encourage
others to undertake overland adventures.
The art and photography exhibited the travel stories captured by
Cecilia and Melinda in Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. The detailed record
documented the different places they visited like Tamu, Kalay, Amarapura,
Mandalay, Mingun, Bagan, Nyaung-U, Nat Pyi Taw (Capital of Myanmar), Bago,
Yangon, Kyaiktiyo, Bangkok (Capital of Thailand), Samutprakan, Hua Hin, Phuket,
Krabi, Penang and Kuala Lumpur (Capital of Malaysia).
Commending Cecilia and Melinda on their displayed travel record,
Alina Saldanha stated, “Every country is unique and sharing this uniqueness is
very important.” Referring to the artworks, she said, “Art is the language of
the soul. It speaks about the artist, personalities, countries and nature. I
think when we keep in touch with all these factors, we remain rooted to the
soul and we understand what is really important in life.”

The artist, Cecilia, is also the author of the Std XII English
Reference book ‘A marked difference in English’ and so felicitated the Std XI
English toppers and the Std XII state topper, Rizma Fernandes, of Don Bosco
Pope John XXIII HSS, Quepem, who secured 92 percent in English in Goa HSSC
board exam. Rizma praised her English teacher, Fr Tamatur Cardozo, for her
brilliant results. Cecilia advised students to thoroughly revise a chapter
every week so that there’s no pressure in English at the end.
The exhibition enlightened the attendees with in-depth
information about the hosts’ Overland Trip, with great results as many were
inspired and requested for necessary overland contacts and permit details.
The
most fascinating of Melinda’s photos were of the Shwezigon Zedi Pagoda in
Nyaung-U and a reflection of it from a small circular intention filled with
water that allowed the former Myanmar monarchs to view the top-most part of the
Pagoda without tilting their heads backwards that might cause their crowns to
fall.
