“Reading habit enriches us in many ways. Hence everyone should develop the habit of
reading that will nurture their growth and demonstrate their love towards their
mother tongue,” said Fr Vital Miranda, parish priest of Guardian Angel Church,
Curchorem at a Konkani reading competition held in Xelvona organised by Dalgado
Konknni Akademi (DKA). Along with the Chief Guest, the DKA President, Tomazinho
Cardozo, Secretary, Vincy Quadros, panch member of Xelvona panchayat, Manoj
Naik were present for the ceremony.
Several readers participated in the
competition. Duella Fernandes, Valeny D’Costa and Emilia Fernandes were the
winners of the first, second and third prizes respectively while Alexinho
Fernandes and Xavier Colaco won the consolation prizes.

In all, there were 22 participants for the
reading competition. They are as follows: Asumpta Azavedo, Alexinho Fernandes,
Luiza Rodrigues, Basiliya Travaso, Ciana Fernandes, Clara Pereira, Dimple
Fernandes, Duella Fernandes, Emelia Fernandes, Felcy Fernandes, Felix R
Fernandes, Flory Fernandes, Fiona Mascarenhas, Slency D;Costa, Joanita
Fernandes, Lency Azavedo, Macklina D’Costa, Melina Mascarenhas, Teodosio
Fernandes, Valeny D’Costa, Valerie Rodrigues and Xavier Colaco.
Despite being a first of its kind
initiative in Xelvona, the response for the competition was excellent. Many
appreciated and thanked the DKA for their initiative and requested such
activities be held in their village more often. Several people attending the
function congratulated DKA for organising the Konkani reading competitions and
other programmes in many villages of Goa.
Amongst
the judges were well known tiatrist William Fernandes and teacher Dr Anselmo
Fernandes. Konkani writer and a budding social worker Edvin Fernandes worked
hard to ensure the programme was a success.
