The word
‘career’ has new meaning today. A career is no longer pursued only to match
aptitude and attain security. A career is now an extension of one’s
personality; an expression of one’s passion and creativity. A student excelling
in math can choose to become an artist, someone great with languages can end up
becoming a veterinarian. Switching careers after establishing oneself in one is
also quite common. All this is possible because of the evolution of the
education system, which now provides a
wider range of options.

Photography
While
almost everybody loves clicking photographs, there is a thin line between a
good photograph and a great photograph and it goes much beyond just clicking a
single button. With a three-year degree course (affiliated with Goa University)
in photography and multimedia at One School Goa, Nachinola, photography lovers
can learn this art from the A Grade University. Shantanu Sheorey, Head of One
School Goa, says, “The interest level for photography is high. Today, the
camera is in everyone’s hand and it has become democratic. But the technical
aspects of photography are changing so rapidly. The multimedia course we offer
is more than just photography; we at One School Goa provide a vision to see
things differently. The new DSLR cameras are not only for photography but
cinema as well, offering more options in the multimedia industry. But to get a
better career, you have to get your basics right.”
Mass
communication and Videography
Writing
is no longer limited to Literature students and if you want to reach out to a
larger audience, you have to be skilled in Mass Media. With various colleges
offering courses in Journalism, Mass communication and Multimedia, students are
spoilt for choice. Nitin Volvoikar, Head of Department of Journalism, St
Xavier’s College, says, “There are many students from Goa and even outside Goa who
want to enrol for the course at St Xavier’s College. There is huge scope for
students in the media industry. Along with the national papers and channels,
there are so many local dailies and local channels in Goa itself; the
opportunities are endless.”
Even
mass media continues to evolve with the current focus on social networking and
similar avenues.
Social
Work
Current
social, communal and political happenings leave the youth feeling eager to act.
One calling that helps them act to bring about the change they wish to see and
channelise their passions is social work. With Don Bosco College offering a
Bachelor and Master degree, one can be a trained social worker with the
opportunity to work with the United Nations.
Alisha
Dias, Assistant Professor, Department Social Work, Don Bosco College, Panjim,
explains, “The social work curriculum ensures that students are fully equipped
with skills to face the emerging challenges of the changing social environment.
Our management and faculty join in the effort of mutual growth and focus on
value based education and the holistic development of the student. Both the courses are affiliated to the Goa
University.”
Physical
Education
When
your love for sport stays with you after your school days, making a career out
of it is one way to keep it alive. Bachelor of Physical Education is a
specialised two-year course available for graduates in any stream. Synora
Rodrigues, a faculty member at the Don Bosco, Panjim, explains, “For
admissions, the students have to pass a fitness test followed by a written exam
and finally, an interview. We receive nearly 70 students for the course; from
them, we shortlist 50. The students have to be good in sports and provide the
sports certificates they won in the past.”
Job
opportunities are galore as the college has campus interviews where placements
are done all over the country.
