Is social media destroying the best wireless connection?

On Sunday, everybody’s Facebook walls were flooded with Mother’s Day special messages, selfies and photographs posted by friends. This raised one serious question: Is Mother’s and Father’s Day the only days to show one’s affection towards their parents? Is posting things online just a form of validation for youngsters? Café delves deeper

In many instances, social media and
smartphones are seen as some of the
greatest enemies by the parents of this
generation. They look at the alluring and
engaging so-called social networking sites
as networking hurdles of today’s world.
Although claiming to build bridges and
connect people, these websites and apps
are perceived to be the communicationkillers
between parents and children. In
an attempt to be omnipresent on social
networking platforms such as Facebook,
WhatsApp, Instagram and so on, and garner
the attention of all, youngsters today
are hardly aware that they are forsaking
something much more important and
meaningful: personal interaction, especially
with their parents.
Nowadays, children don’t have time to talk
to their parents, not because they are at work
or away from home, but because they are
on Facebook, liking, commenting or sharing
something. They don’t listen to half of the
stuff their parents are saying to them as they
are simultaneously busy texting someone on
WhatsApp. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, parents’
birthdays are celebrated just by posting
their pictures online instead of meeting and
spending time with them. This lack of active
presence of their kids in their lives makes
parents feel disconnected, and no matter how
much the kids write about the bond they share
with their parents on social media, the gap
stays put.
