The International Centre Goa (ICG) at Dona Paula was conceived as a
forum to bring together thinkers, scholars and academicians, achievers,
sociologists, industrialists and creative people from India and around the
world, to look at the larger issues before the new world and to develop new
techniques and perspectives for handling them. With a mission to focus on
kindling ideas within parents and the youth to think and act outside the box,
Aashay Abhyankar, the director and mentor of the Abhyankar’s Indian
Administrative Service Academy, will deliver a talk, titled, ‘Is there an IAS
officer in you?’
After working for four and a half years as an
assistant legal advisor in the investigations section of the Securities and
Exchange Board of India, a board that regulates the Stock Market Exchange in
India, Aashay Abhyankar decided to work with his father, Ajit Abhyankar, one of
the founding members of the Abhyankar’s I. A.S. Academy that is located in Pune.
The academy is an institution dedicated to imparting skills for exams conducted
by the Union Public Service Commission. It is an academy where students receive
personal attention and are groomed to excel and become competent to make their
passage into the civil services an easy task.

Goa has many educational institutions dedicated
to imparting knowledge right from the school level to graduation and post
graduation in fields of engineering, medicine and humanities. Students have the
opportunity to partake in any course of their liking, provided they put in the
effort and obtain the required percentage to choose the course. However, not
many students opt for a career in the civil services. “If you look at the
percentage of Goans who are opting for the civil services, you will notice that
the number is very small,” says Aashay. This is a point well stated as the
literacy rate of the state is very high and also there are a large number of
people who are well versed with the English language. And when such is the
case, being literate and fluent in English helps as it leads to better
articulation of thought, a skill that is very advantageous to those that apply
for civil service examinations.
The role
of IAS officers today has become very diverse. It is no longer structure
specific and is evolving and becoming dynamic. “When you apply, answer and
clear the examinations that are conducted by the Union Public
Service Commission, you are employed directly by the government of India for
thirty-odd years of your life at a very high level of decision making. The area
of work is more diverse when compared to the private sector. So as an IAS
officer, you’d be working for different government departments and helping
formulate policies, implementing these policies and performing regulatory
functions for the state and country,” says Aashay.
So the talk is going to be an awareness drive to
let students and parents know about the various career opportunities available
in this field of work and help them plan better. Students can learn more about
the skills required and methods to prepare for UPSC examinations by attending
Aashay Abhyankar’s talk on October 9, 2016, from 10:30 am to 1 pm at the
International Centre Goa, Dona Paula.
