Today is an important day for fans of the empire, or all inhabitants of the galaxy. May 4 (the 124th/125th day of the year, depending on whether it’s a leap year or not), is also known as ‘Star Wars Day’. Followers of the George Lucas franchise loosely bandy the expression “May the 4th be with you,” about, while referring to the pop culture phrase in the Star Wars franchise, “May the Force be with you.”
Goa’s following of the franchise is perhaps not as large as its metro counterparts, but in enthusiasm, it is no less active. The last release saw many a family debate spark off, as the launch was pushed from December 18, 2016 to Christmas Day. This led to many a stalwart Goan sneaking out of the house in the midst of the festivities, purely to get a glimpse of what the new instalment had to offer its faithful following. This included some fans even turning up in attire that was movie themed and centric like capes and Darth Vader masks. In keeping with this, there can be no doubt as to what the significance of May 4 could be to the fan following in the state.
For fans across the globe, typical festivities consist of groups of friends that share a passion for Star Wars getting together and viewing the movies or series. For those that are less faint-of-heart, Lightsaber duels are the norm. In this reasonably modern age, Star Wars gaming also occurs. In this little part of the world, we ask fans (responses on the right) exactly what it is that makes thing tick for them. The newest instalment of the franchise made its way to theatres worldwide, last December. The next one will be in theatres in 2017. What did they truly enjoy about Episode VII: The Force Awakens? What do they look forward to in Episode VIII? Most importantly, as most Star Wars fans would if they could, what is the one piece of memorabilia they would personally like to own as fans?
Footnote: Interestingly enough, the phrase dates back to when Margaret Thatcher was elected the first woman prime minister of Britain, in the year 1979. An ad in the London Evening News, taken out by her party, said “May the Fourth be with you, Maggie. Congratulations.” In addition to this, marking a strange coincidence, this day marks the turning point for the Pacific Theater in World War II in 1942, similar to the Battle of Yavin, which also played a role in George Lucas’ creation of the Star Wars franchise, as well as the liberation of Denmark and the Netherlands from Nazi Germany in 1945, similar to Return of the Jedi. – Agencies
