It’s not just soppy love songs that have feelings and
emotions wrapped in them either. Reggae music has this chilled out vibe that
makes you want to dance but yet not get too excited about it. Rock music has
this mix of pain, determination, hope and aggression woven into the lyrics
whether it’s Queen warning you that they will rock you, Journey telling you to
not stop believing or Guns and Roses wondering where do they go now, until
their guitarist said, “You know what.. I’m out of here”.
The metal guys have an extraordinary amount of rage and
anger which we could help them resolve if they would only sing it out clearly
instead of growling all the time. We can’t help you if we can’t understand you.
Electrionic Dance Music makes you want to fix that broken car engine that’s
making all those sounds while your body can’t seem to stop dancing to that
infectious beat. Country music makes you sad for that cowboy who lost his girl/
dog/ horse and yet happy for yourself because you’re better off than him. Muzak
makes you want to buy stuff or fall asleep buying stuff, whichever comes first.
Pop music makes you want to sing along no matter how
ridiculous the words. Why they even gave the Grammy for Song of the Year to a
song that has the words ‘Under my umbrella.. ella .. ella .. ey .. ey .. ey ..
ey’ repeated over and over as the main chorus.
Hip Hop will make you want to get down low and dance like there’s no
tomorrow.
I could go on but the undeniable fact is that music does
play on your emotions and can even control your moods. It can lift you up when
you’re feeling down; fill you with hope and love when you pray; help you say
the words you always wanted to say to the girl you love or just irritate you
when you can’t get that song out of your head.
Research has shown that music activates wide areas of your
brain, especially those involved in motor action, emotion and creativity. It
also has the ability to trigger memories. Quite often, we will hear a song and
suddenly memories of places or people will flood our mind. Sometimes, a song
will bring back memories of your long forgotten childhood or a particular
moment in time so vividly that you can almost feel the heat of the sun, hear
the birds or smell the sorpotel that was cooking on that day.
This memory association is not always a good thing either.
Some songs may remind you of bad times and broken hearts, some may bring back
memories of loved ones that have died. The memories we associate with songs
weave the songs into our lives like our very own soundtrack. Every now and then
we will play back a song and relive a little bit of the glory, love, pain or
happiness of the moments of our life. As life goes by, we will keep adding
songs and through them, our memories will live on.
