After a break of two years, the 75th edition of the World
Congress of Homoeopathy brought together doctors and researchers, concerned
with the management of children with special needs, hyperthyroidism,
addictions, dermatological affections, osteosarcomas, cerebral palsy and other
conditions. Doctors from all over the world attended the Congress organised by
Dekon Congress Turkey and the only Goan who attended the conference to present
her papers was Dr Zoya João, from Baga, Velim.
Dr Zoya João, Head of the department of Pathology at Shri
Kamaxidevi Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Shiroda, presented five
research papers at the recently concluded 75th World Congress of Homoeopathy,
Liga Medicorum Homoeopathica Internationalis (LMHI) 2022 which was held in
September at Hilton Maslak, Istanbul, Turkey. Her presentations included her
PhD Research work, ‘The Effect of Homoeopathic Constitutional Medicines on
persons with Alcoholic Use Disorder’ and her extensive research on ‘Adolescent
Disorders’, ‘Homoeopathy – A boon for Public Health in India’, ‘Role of
Homoeopathy in the management of Parasitic Infestation’ and ‘Problems of
Dentition’.

Earlier, at the 74th LMHI World Congress 2019 in Sorrento,
Italy, she presented two research papers, ‘Comparative study between didactic
teaching methods by analysing case studies of famous personalities of Hollywood
and Bollywood with pathological disorders’ and ‘Prevalence of Hypertension
during pregnancy’. In 2017, at the LMHI World Congress in Leipzig, Germany, she
presented her paper on ‘Vision 2020 for Homoeopathic Education in India’. “The
75th LMHI was to be held at Izmir, Turkey but due to the global pandemic, the
conference dates had to be rescheduled twice and finally it was held at
Istanbul, Turkey,” says Dr Zoya, who has been a Physician for UNICEF supported
projects.
The LMHI 2017 held at Leipzig themed, ‘Networking in Medical
Care – Collaboration for the benefit of the Patients’ diligently focused on
medical collaboration for the benefit of the patients and discussed on the
different approaches of conventional medicine and of Homoeopathy, Naturopathy,
Anthroposophy and Ayurveda. It was at Leipzig that Dr Samuel Hahnemann began
his medical practice and his birthplace is at Meissen. The LMHI 2019 held at
Sorrento, Naples, focussed on ‘The Medicine of the Future from the ancient
heart’ and Sorrento represented a symbolic pathway back to the origins of the
historical roots of homoeopathy as Naples was the crib of Italian Homoeopathy.
Speaking about her experience at the conference, Dr Zoya says,
“The pandemic gave me an opportunity to send in more research papers. By God’s
grace, all my papers have been selected. Due to paucity of time, on account of
my multiple schedules I was unable to send more research papers earlier. The
75th LMHI had delegates from 40 countries. Anatolia was chosen for the LMHI as
Anatolia or Asia Minor is the birth place of Galen and the practice of
Medicine. It is the land of brilliant thinkers and philosophers Hippocrates and
Claudius. This Congress had educational round table discussions on ‘The Changes
and Challenges of Education in Homoeopathy during and after lockdowns’,
‘Development of Homoeopathy in Turkey’ and ‘Homoeopathy as an adjuvant to
standard care in cases of Covid-19.”
Dr Zoya is a renowned panellist, speaker and resource person at
various symposiums, teachers training workshops and conferences at the state,
national and international level. A graduate from NIH, Kolkata a Central
Govt.Institute she had the privilege of participating at the inauguration of
the labour room and Operation Theatre of her college, which was done at the
hands of St Teresa. Her stint at Hayes Memorial Mission Hospital, Allahabad and
an MD in Medicine moulded her towards research. As the Zonal Coordinator for
Ac- Nielsen ORG for Maharashtra and Gujarat, she has evaluated the UDISHA
Project for NIPCCD and Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of
India.
During the Covid pandemic, Dr Zoya conducted awareness sessions
for children in child care institutions along with her sister, Adv Lida João,
during Adv Lida’s tenure as Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee –South
Goa and also as Incharge Chairperson Child Welfare Committee North Goa
propagating the Covid guidelines and contactable help lines and also
demonstrating the hand washing techniques. She is one amongst the recipient of
the Herald – Air India Broad Outlook Learner Teachers Award for South Goa
District. She is an examiner in the subject of Pathology at the Goa University
for the BHMS course.
An ardent supporter of social causes and a lover of poetry, she
has co-authored books on Goan cuisine, short stories, literary essays and also
her Goan short story, ‘Motu Miguel’s Skilful Stunts’ was featured in Balcão
Tales, a collection of twenty-six stories, shortlisted from the entries in
English, Konkani, Marathi and Portuguese, for the Fundação Oriente Short Story
Competition 2019. “My flair for writing flows naturally from my late parents,
my father, Francisco Xavier Martinho João, a former headmaster of Don Bosco’s
who served in the West Bengal Educational Service and my mother, Irma da Cota
Pinto de Almeida João, who had varied passions and taught in British East
Africa. I owe my success today to both my maternal and paternal
grandparents,Taumaturgo Da Silva Almeida and Ida da Cota Pinto and paternal grandparents
Avertano João and Matildes de Sousa who encouraged and guided both my sister
and me to pursue our dreams with no inhibitions and no pressures whatsoever to
achieve our goals ,despite hailing from an orthodox and conservative
background, I also owe my success to God’s munificence ” says Dr Zoya.
Being
of an academic bent of mind, she is already working on her research Papers to
be presented at the 76th LMHI to be held at Columbia. “I believe that there are
unbounded potentialities to the human mind where impossible can be struck into
possible. We are in a glorious era where we need to let go our limiting
thoughts and experience limitless magnificence of humankind expressed in every
area of creation, every subject, every field of human endeavour,” concludes Dr
Zoya.
