A workshop on
‘Intellectual Property Rights
and its application in the Industry’ was held and organized by the IQAC of
Rosary College of Commerce & Arts in collaboration with IPR ARENA recently.
The workshop began with a short prayer service by Assoc. Prof. Tanya Marchon
and an introductory note by Asst. Prof. Sonia Kamat who briefed the audience of
the contents of the workshop.
The Principal of the college, Rev, Dr. Simão Diniz, welcomed the
esteemed speakers and the audience consisting of the faculty of Rosary College
as well as many other colleges around Goa. He spoke about the collaboration
with IPR ARENA.

After a brief introduction about IPR Arena by Nikhil Kittane,
Technical Session I commenced. It was given by Basavraj N. T. who enlightened
the audience on the various forms of IPR and further elaborated by giving
examples of multinational brands such as K.F.C. and Google.
Technical Session II was held by Madam Sheetal Suryaprakash, who
emphasised on the need for protection of IP, sound IP strategy and also the application
process. She also highlighted the great bottle battle between Coco cola &
Pepsi and the ongoing dispute between Samsung and Apple.
Post lunch, the third
Technical Session of the day was held by Mr. Nikhlil Kittane. He focused on
what an examiner looks for while examining the various IPR’s. He further shed
light on the issue by highlighting a few popular patent and trademark disputes.
The session ended with a brief explanation of how the website of IPR Arena
functions.
The workshop
concluded with an address by Madam Suvarna Surlakar, director of Codewell
computers, who spoke of the importance of IP Protection and also how students
need to be motivated to follow the same. The workshop on the whole, emphasised
on how the value of intangible property such as IPR is growing rapidly.
The workshop was well
attended and received positive feedback from the faculty members of other
colleges. The report of the event was read by Asst. Prof. Avril Antao and was
followed by the Vote of Thanks delivered by the convener of IQAC, Asst. Prof.
Alison Quadros.
