In cricketing terms, a ‘run out’ is a very popular concept.
For the team that runs a player out, it is a cause of celebration. For the
player being run out, it is most aggrieving. But this ICC Cricket World Cup, it
will take on a whole new meaning. People will run out of work, students will
run out of class, and some may even run out into the backyards of friends where
‘giant screens’ and projectors have been set up with the purpose of catching
all the latest action. This ICC Cricket World Cup is being hosted by Australia,
which is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of India. As such, there will be many a
game being played in the middle of the working day. This of course, need not be
a deterrent to anyone.
Interestingly enough, this ICC Cricket World Cup has seen
many turnarounds. Pubs have reworked their operations to suit the screening
needs of the faithful. One such example is Down the Road in Panjim. When asked
for his take, proprietor Lyndon Furtado said, “We are dedicated to screening
all sporting events of interest. As such, whether cricket or football, we will
be active in giving fans a place to go to in order to get behind their team.
That is something that they could look forward to, even if it is the middle of
the day.”

In a similar unprecedented move, football fans have also
gotten behind the men in blue, with popular support group, The Football Dug Out
adopting a pseudonym for the duration of the tournament. Now under the moniker
of The Cricket Dug Out, the group will do what they do best: bring together
fans for sporting screenings. Founder of the group, Conrad Barretto, says, “In
a nation that breathes cricket, The Football Dug Out team has chosen to launch
The Cricket Dug Out concept, which will cover and organise live screenings for
the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. Due to the odd timings, we foresee
many breakfast parties coming up in Goa, and we may most likely be well
involved in a fair few. While we will screen mostly only India’s games in the
knock-out stages, it is fair to say that we will also work towards the
screenings of day-night games in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final
matches.”
