Songs for the motherland

On India’s 69th Independence Day, Café gets in touch with a few Goan lyricists, musicians and singers about their contributions that have been dedicated to the nation

Amongst other things, what makes
Independence Day special is the music that is dedicated to one’s country. Some
of the popular patriotic album songs include the likes of ‘Vande Matram’ by
Lata Mangueshkar and A R Rehman, ‘E Mere Vatan Ke Logo’, ‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti’,
‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ and others. Just like these popular songs, Goan
musicians too have composed tracks of reverence.

“I composed the following song for my
historical performance at the event in New Delhi that celebrated the 50th year
of India’s Independence, witnessed by 250,000 people live and the entire nation
on television. This was a very special song as three well known people from
across religions got together to write a song for the country. I composed the
song, Mumtaz Nikhat wrote the lyrics and Louis Banks composed the music.”

Lyrics:

Mere Vatan Hindustan, Mere Vatan Hindustan

Teri zameen jannat nishan, Tune mujhe sab
kuch diya

Kaise kahun main shukriya

Main tere jashn e naaz mein kaunsa geet
sunaun

Tu bata zara ke main kis tarah dil ko
zubaan banaun

Mujhko jo tujhse pyaarhai, Tujhpe jaan ye
nisaar hai

Vande Mataram

Sidhanath Buyao, Composer/Singer

“I had composed the music for a song,
‘Himalayachi Sapana’ written by Lok Kavi, Manohar Rai Sardesai for my patriotic
song album “Swatarndra Goa”, which was launched on the occasion of 50 years of
Goa’s liberation. This song was composed and sung by me. Today, I am happy that
our own Konkani and Marathi patriotic songs are being sung in various schools
and competitions. These songs can actually cultivate patriotism in children,
and even the people of this state. I had composed three Marathi and five
Konkani songs for this album, which were sung by noted singers like Swapnil
Bandodkar and Nephie Rod, apart from me.

Lyrics:

Himalayachi Sapna Amchi

Daryacho Haves

Tirangi Amcho Bhes Bharati

Bharat Amcho Des

Colin de Cruz, music producer

“I recently recorded a teenage female
saxophonist from Goa, Izel Siqueira. The track, ‘Take Five’ is one of the most
popular jazz standards in the world. Our version has an Indian sound with
bansuri and tabla. Jazz Goa dedicates this track to Independence Day. Jazz is
all about freedom; every artiste is free to express his/her own emotions in any
track that they play.”

Tushar Kamat, music composer/lyricist

“I was listening to an interview of a
martyr’s father on television in the year 2010. I was blown away by his spirit;
being a retired army man himself. I felt I should write something on it.”

Lyrics:

In rago main kyu hai machal raha

khoon aag main hai badal raha

eh vatan bata jara, kya hai nata tera mera

yeh na maut hai, main shahid hoon

lahu ki kalam se likha geet hai zindagi se

abhi hoon phira, kya hai nata tera mera.

Shakuntala Bharne, Classical Singer

“I had written a song on patriotism during
my college days for an all Goa college competition, somewhere close to
independence day.”

Lyrics:

Swatantracho bavto laun, 15 august janmalo

Matiecho swas koshiyalharan bharillo

Utangar pavsan dilo khushalbharit yevkar

Akhkho bharat gaulaglo ananda checatar

Dharmajati sodun bedh

Ekcharacho lavun ved

Spout gevya bavtyacho

Deshmhankarpacho

Varun Carvalho, Singer/Lyricist/Composer

“I have composed two tracks evoking
patriotism. One is called ‘Stand Up’ and the other one is called ‘Anthem Goa’.
The former is a call to everyone in the country. I hope the song inspires
everybody in our country to stand up for what is right, only then will things
change in our country. We perform this song especially for our ‘Turn the
Tide’programmes that we run in the schools and colleges.”

Lyrics:

I will be strong,

I will be brave,

I won’t be scared,

I won’t be afraid…
