If you are debating between taking the elevator and climbing
the stairs, it would perhaps be best to heed the Goa Tower Run logo ‘Take the
Stairs’. A complete fitness regime, its benefits are amply clear. “It not only
helps one to lose weight, but tones muscles and is an excellent cardio workout.
I would recommend it at least once or twice a week,” advises Kim Sabir, fitness
coach and CEO Adventure Breaks, whose company has jointly organised the Goa
Tower Run with CII/Yi. Endorsing the ability of stair-climbing to burn calories
three times more than a brisk walk, Adventure Breaks director, Ashwin Tombat
exhorts people to ‘take the stairs’ instead. A tower run affords the perfect
opportunity to exemplify this.
In sync with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and
Young India (Yi)’s mission to make health and fitness part of the corporate
policy as well as for the general public, Adventure Breaks teamed up with the
two associations last year to bring India its first ever tower run in Goa. “The
CII’s mission is to create health beliefs and benefits in the corporate sector,
beyond the business aspects,” affirms CII (Goa) Chairman Kirit Maganlal.
Supported and recognised by the Towerrunning World Association
(TW), Austria, the Goa Tower Run is India’s longest, involving running up and down
five buildings. Worldwide, over 160 races are held in 25 countries and these in
turn are evaluated for the Towerrunning World Cup by the TWA.
What sets tower running apart from other sports is that it
requires no skills or prior training. “It’s not hard to do,” affirms Sabir,
envisaging a larger participation than last year’s 250. “As long as one is
physically fit, anyone can participate. No skills are required. You can run, or
walk, stop and take a rest and complete it at your own pace. There is no finishing
time. It could be anywhere from 11 minutes to 35 minutes. It is the
participation that counts. It is also ideal for those who do not participate in
conventional sports. In an event such as this, where teams are participating
and contesting, it helps to bring out the competitive spirit and team building.”
To the young, points out Erle Britto, National Media and
Promotions, National Young India, tower running is an opportunity to address
issues that affect them the most – health, and environmental impact from lesser
usage of elevators.
The Goa Tower Run is inviting everyone to take the stairs,
one step at a time in a comfortable outfit and a pair of running shoes.
