Coming from a Bollywood family, Farah Khan Ali is the
daughter of Sanjay Khan and the eldest sibling of Sussanne and Zayed Khan. She
is a brand by herself when it comes to jewellery designing and has seen
celebrities walk the red carpet with her jewellery. Tanishq recently tied up
with Farah Khan Ali for their diamond jewellery collection exclusively designed
by her. The collection comprises 54 pieces ranging from Rs 1.5 Lakhs to Rs
5Lakhs with the best of gemstones.
A graduate from Gemological Institute of America, Farah was
inspired by Persian aesthetics for this collection, “We come from Persian
ancestry and many centuries ago, our forefathers came to India from Iraq and
settled in Mumbai. The designs by the Moghuls were drawn from the Rajput era. I
wanted to design a line which looked glamorous but at the same time could be
worn through the day for different occasions,’ says Farah.

Farah is currently working with 90 craftsmen at her
jewellery design workshop and sits with each one of them including the Computer
Aided Design (CAD) artists to see her product materialise from thought to
production. “It is like giving five chefs the ingredients and the recipes. Yet
they will interpret it differently, these artists are experienced and I have
been in the market for 22 years, so I want to see how the piece is prepared.
Once the masterpiece is made, I leave it to mass production.”
Emeralds are Farah’s all time favourite gemstone. “I am
known as the Queen of Emeralds. I am fascinated by the colour green because it
reminds me of life. The Emperor Nero used to say that one should look at the
world through the green of the emerald because it is so refreshing to the eyes.
The colour green draws me to it.”
Farah has her own home in Guirim, where she takes a breather
before heading back to her hectic schedule. “When I was younger, I had a nanny
who raised me. She was with me till I was 31. She used to take me for Sunday
mass and the novenas and prepare Goan dishes from sweets to Balchao. When I
come to Goa, I feel like I am home. I don’t come here to party, but to relax. I
love quiet places. Once I came down to Goa for four days and wound up sketching
45 designs.”
The spouse of popular DJ, Aqueel, she believes that they
both let their creativity flow freely without interfering in their respective
fields. “We are polar opposites. He is
very complimentary about my work. We always take time out and make trips with
our children. He is musically occupied all the time and it never gets quiet,
that is why I come to Goa.”
Farah has seen celebrities like Deepika Padukone, Ashwariya
Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and many more wear her jewellery, but which
celebrity she would want to see wear her jewellery next? “I would love to see
Angelina Jolie wear my jewellery because she carries it so well and among the
legendary beauties it would have been Princess Grace of Monaco,” concludes
Farah Khan Ali.
