IPA convention at Panjim
PANJIM: The Indian Pharmaceutical Association, Goa State Branch, is hosting the VI-IPA National Convention 2013, on the theme, Indian Pharma Industry: Strategies for Excellence, at Kala Academy, Panjim, from April 8 to 10. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, will inaugurate the convention at 4.30 pm on April 8. Gerald Heddell, Director of Inspection, Enforcements and Standards, MHRA, will deliver the keynote address and Dr G N Singh, Drugs Controller General of India will give the IPA President’s Special Oration.
The event will also showcase a grand exhibition of formulations, machinery, equipment and ancillary units related to pharma with participation of all businesses, organizations and individuals with industry related products and services. The exhibition will be inaugurated at the hands of Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on April 8, 2013, at 3 pm.
Verification process in Ponda
PONDA: The Ponda Deputy Collector’s office has undertaken verification process to ascertain the claims submitted by individuals to Forest Rights Committees under the Schedule Tribes and other Traditional Forest Dwellers Act 2005. According to information available at the Deputy Collector’s office, the Forest rights committees were constituted for revenue villages of Panchawadi, Borim, Codar, Nirancal, Shiroda, Bethora, Candepar, Bhoma, Ganjem, Usgao, Queula and Conxem in Ponda taluka. In all, 238 individuals have filed claims from five out of the 12 revenue villages. It may be recalled that last year, the Forest Right committees were formed in respective panchayats and accordingly people were asked to submit their claims.
The village-wise claims are Usgao (117), Borim (66), Shiroda (25), Ganjem (19) and Nirankal (11).
According to information, the verification process has just begun and the officials will ascertain the claims made by 19 individuals from Ganjem, followed by rest of the villages and later claims made under community rights will be ascertained.
Drivers held for theft
CURCHOREM: Curchorem Police on Monday arrested two truck drivers in connection with a theft case.
According to Curchorem Police, Sebasteao Fernandes (33) from Gudemoll-Sanvordem and Venkatesh Arkere from Pontemoll-Curchorem, who were working for a businessman from Curchorem, allegedly stole spare parts of the trucks, which are lying ideal due to stoppage of mining activities and sold it at a scrap yard.
Acting on the complaint lodged by the owner, police arrested the duo and recovered the spare parts.
Meanwhile, Curchorem Police arrested Finton Vaz from Valkinni-Sanguem for allegedly misbehaving with women at Curchorem bus stand. He was later produced before Quepem SDM and was released on bail.
Body found at Terekol
PERNEM: Pernem Police on Sunday recovered an unidentified male body at Terekol shore.
According to Pernem Police, the deceased is suspected to be in his early forties. The body has been preserved at GMC morgue in Bambolim PSI S Gawas is investigating the case.
Anticipatory bail plea rejected
MARGAO: The south Goa additional sessions judge, Desmond D’costa on Monday rejected the anticipatory bail application of Rocky V Vas of Curtorim who is wanted by the Margao police for an offence committed under section 406 of the IPC.
Vas who is a driver of a bus plying on the Mumbai to Goa route had filed for anticipatory bail stating that a false complaint has been filed against him alleging misappropriation of some parcel. He denied having been entrusted with the parcel and claimed the complaint was false and mischievous.
Public prosecutor B Gaonkar submitted that the applicant who is the driver is the main accused as the parcel was handed to him and he was aware of its contents.
One held for causing injury
MARGAO: The Cuncolim police on Sunday March 31 registered offence under section 279, 338 IPC against Vittal Janu Kasturi, Yellapur, Karway driver of truck KA-25-B-8465 for causing grievous injuries to Pundalik Gundappa Bachantti also from Yellapur. According to police information on Sunday accuse driver Kasturi at IDC Cuncolim, in front of Mahadurga Steel Company Limited reversed his truck without looking back and knocked down the victim, Bachantti, causing grievous injuries. Further investigation in the case is in progress.
Verification camp at Cuncolim
MARGAO: The annual camp for verification and stamping of weights and measures will be held at Khope House, Cuncolim from April 1 to 30. The camp will be held on all days except on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10 am to 1 pm, stated a press note issued by Legal Metrology Inspector Arun Panchwadkar.
Offence registered against duo
MARGAO: Colva police on Sunday registered an offence under section 11 (M) (N) of Prevention Cruelty to Animals Act against accused Papu (full name not known) of Peda, Benaulim and Poder Sanjay (full name not known) of Betalbatim for organizing bull fights. According to police reports, the two accused persons are alleged to have organised fights between their buffaloes for public entertainment in an open space, thereby subjecting the buffaloes to cruelty.

TERI talks sustainable development
PANJIM: The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI), Goa organized a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) for the outreach of its project ‘Directions, Innovation and Strategies for Sustainable Development (DISHA) in Goa’ recently at the International Centre, here.
This FGD was held to share insights from the afore-mentioned study with stakeholders from the construction and building sectors. The discussion was attended by 36 participants representing allied government departments, architects, developers, contractors, engineers and academicians. The overall focus was to assess opportunities and promote action towards greening the construction sector in Goa.
The findings and recommendations from the DISHA study for the construction sector were presented by Dr Hina Zia from TERI.
For successful implementation of the recommendations, the role of Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) was explained by Priyanka Kochhar from ADaRSH.
Scouts, guides learn about Ham Shack
PANJIM: On March 10, members of the Basilite Scouts & Guides, under the leadership of District Chief Commissioner Mario A Pereira visited the ‘Ham Shack’ operated by M S Shinde at Altinho, Panjim.
Mr Shinde welcomed the Basilites to his ‘Ham Shack’. After introductions, Mr Shinde through audio-visual illustrations demonstrated how ‘Ham Shack’ Technology works and the Q codes used in its operation the world over. He also explained how and when a ‘Ham Shack’ can be of real help to a community / state / country.
Finally the groups had questions for Mr Shinde as to how he pursued the hobby, how to obtain certificates and where and to whom to apply.
The group of 10 represented 7 villages of South District.
Gautami excels at Kare College of Law
PANJIM: Gautami Govind Raikar, a student from G R Kare College of Law, Margao, excelled in the 5th year LLB (HONS) for the academic year 2012-2013.
Gautami was judged one of the top students of the academic year 2012-2013 and bagged more than five top awards instituted by the college.
She was felicitated at the college annual day function held at the college auditorium recently by the chief guest Rev Fr Dr Diniz, Principal of Rosary College, Navelim.
Speaking on the occasion, Rev Fr Dr Diniz congratulated Ms Gautami for her achievements and wished her success in all future endeavours. Gautami was also congratulated by her college principal, teaching faculty and students.

Apollo Victor decodes recurrent cold
PANJIM: Besides complicated cases, the Apollo Victor Hospitals department of ENT also strives to free people of simple symptoms like recurrent colds / nose-blocks, etc.
A 45 year old came for a routine check-up to the ENT department of Apollo Victor Hospitals, Margao, complaining of recurring common cold with nose-block.
Taking down the patient’s history, Apollo Victor Hospital’s ENT Specialist Dr Subhash Chandra realized it was more than a common cold. The symptoms recurred monthly and the patient was being treated for common cold for the last 3 years. An examination found he had extensive nasal polyps.
The hospital’s ENT surgeon, Dr Subhash Chandra asked for Routine Blood investigations, CT PNS (Para – Nasal Sinuses) and Diagnostic Nasal Endoscopy which revealed extensive Nasal Polyps in all sinuses. It confirmed Dr Subhash Chandra’s diagnosis and he recommended a Functional Endoscopic Sinus Procedure (FESS). He is now free from discomfort of recurrent cold, nose block and nasal discharge.

Sattari local succumbs
VALPOI: A 30-year-old resident of Brahmakarmali-Nagargao, Sattari, succumbed to burn injuries at GMC Hospital in Bambolim.
According to Valpoi Police, Namrata Mauskar was admitted in GMC Hospital after she sustained burn injuries at her residence on March 26. However, she succumbed to burn injuries while undergoing medical treatment on Sunday.
Police said Mauskar died within seven years of her marriage. The body was handed over to his relatives and PSI Uday Gawade is investigating the case.
Nigerian held for molestation
CALANGUTE: Anjuna Police on Monday arrested the 35-year-old Nigerian national in connection with an attempted molestation case at Arpora.
According to police sources, Ikechokwa Edward was also allegedly involved in another molestation attempt at Parra. Anjuna Police is investigating the case.
It may be recalled that Arpora-Nagoa Deputy Sarpanch Joseph Fernandes had foiled an alleged attempt by the Nigerian to molest a girl at Arpora and a complaint was registered at Anjuna Police station.
One accused of making threats
OLD GOA: A resident of Agustinwada, St Cruz, has accused a man from St Cruz of threatening her husband at Agustinwada on Sunday. According to Old Goa Police, Eclipasia Fernandes complained that the accused attempted to assault her husband with glass, which in turn hit her son’s head, causing him injury and the accused fled from the scene. The complainant further stated that the accused armed with a knife returned at Agustinwada and threatened to kill her husband. PSI Sagun Sawant is investigating the case.
Siolim local injured in mishap
PORVORIM: A pedestrian from Siolim was injured after he was knocked down by a jeep at Britowado, Parra.
According to Mapusa Police, the accident occurred when the jeep (GA-03-H-6562), which was proceeding from Saligao, dashed against Mahesh V Naik Bandodkar while he was crossing the road near the bus stop at Britowado.
Head Constable Santosh Gawde is investigating the case.
