Frog poaching: Three get bail
MARGAO: All the three persons from Verna, who were arrested by the Forest Department, for poaching of frogs have been released on bail by the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Canacona. The accused, who were represented by Adv Byron Rodrigues, were ordered to be released on a bail of Rs 10,000 each with one identical surety. The court directed the trio not to leave the state and to report to the Range Forest Office, Canacona, for three days.
Woman succumbs to burn injuries
MARGAO: Asma Ismail Ratiwale, 30 years house wife, resident of Moti Dongor, who was undergoing treatment for burn injuries at the Goa Medical College Hospital, Bambolim, succumbed to her burn injuries on June 11. Margao police informed that Asma, a housewife, was admitted to Hospicio with burn injuries after her dupatta came in contact with the stove on June 10. Her husband who went to her rescue also suffered burn injuries. She was shifted to Bambolim on June 11 at 9.30 am. Police registered the death as unnatural.
MP native dies
MARGAO: A native of Madhya Pradesh, aged 22, died after he complained of chest pain at Cuncolim. According to Cuncolim police, Mohanlal Salam, hailing from Shivoni, Madhya Pradesh had come down to Cuncolim IDC to meet his friend on June 10 when at night he complained of chest pain. He was immediately rushed to Trimurthi Hospital, Gogol, here, were he was declared brought dead. A case of unnatural death has been registered by the police.
BoB ATM catches fire
MARGAO: The ATM of the Bank of Baroda branch located near the Lohia Maidan caught fire late last night. The fire was put off by a lone fire tender. It was caused by a suspected short circuit.
Girl’s father welcomes CBI probe
VASCO: Welcoming the government’s decision to hand over the case to the CBI, the father of the 8-year-old girl sexually assaulted in a school toilet in Vasco in January has said the CBI is their only hope for justice to his daughter and the family. Speaking to Herald, the girl’s father said the handing over the case to the CBI was his demand, which had been supported by other people and NGOs.
“As the case was not getting solved, I had personally requested Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to hand over the case to the CBI, as I had lost faith in the Crime Branch. With the government handing over the case to the CBI, there is at least a ray of hope,” said the victim’s father.
“The CBI is our only hope for justice to my daughter and our family,” said the father.
It may be recalled that the girl’s father and NGOs had frequently appealed to the government to hand over the case to CBI, after alleging that the Crime Branch had gone slow on the case.
Curca sarpanch quits office
MERCES: Curca Sarpanch Ghanshyam Vernekar has tendered in his resignation to honour the power-sharing agreement among the ruling panchas.
Speaking to Herald, Vernekar informed that he has tendered his resignation on Tuesday as an agreement was reached to rotate the post of sarpanch. Vikram Faterpekar is likely to take over as the next sarpanch.

Sancorda local booked for murder bid
PONDA: Collem Police has booked a case against a man on charges of attempting to murder his wife at Battar-Sancorda. According to information, the woman was admitted to the health centre in Valpoi after she allegedly consumed poison on May 30. The victim was later shifted to GMC Hospital in Bambolim and was later discharged. Collem Police had referred the matter to the Mamlatdar and Executive Magistrate of Dharbandora to record a statement of the victim. Based on the report of the Dharbandora Mamlatdar, which stated that the victim was threatened and forced to consume poison, Collem Police registered the offence under Section 307 IPC against the accused. PSI Sachin Lokre is investigating the case.
Pedestrian knocked down to death
OLD GOA: A 60-year-old pedestrian from Tamil Nadu died after he was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle along the NH17 at St Cruz on Monday. According to Old Goa Police, the unidentified vehicle which was proceeding from Bambolim to Panjim knocked down one Chinnaswami. Police further informed that Chinnaswami died on the spot and the driver fled from the site along with his vehicle. PSI Sagun Sawant is investigating the case.
Labourer rescued from well
COLLEM: A 40-year-old labourer was rescued from a well near Hirabai School Novem-Sancorda by the Robot 35 staff attached to Collem Police station. On receiving news that Dhaku Gawali had accidentally fallen into a deep well, the Robot 35 staff rushed to the site and informed the Fire Services and the 108 Ambulance. Without wasting any time, the Robot staff, comprising Head Constable Narayan Gawas, Police Constable Prashant Kamat and Police Driver Sapnesh Naik, tied a plank on both ends and let it inside the well. The labourer who was inside the well grabbed the plank and put himself on it. He was later pulled out of the well safely.
Assam native killed in Verna mishap
VASCO: A 23-year-old motorcycle rider from Assam died in a road accident at Titan Junction, Verna, on Monday. According to Verna Police, Mummun Mahaliya Chandra who was proceeding on motorcycle (GA-08-S-6333) met with an accident at Titan Junction. The body was shifted to GMC Hospital in Bambolim for post-mortem and preservation. PSI Hiru Kavlekar is investigating the case.
Healing service at Sancoale
PANJIM: Mass with special praye rs for a Miraculous ealing will be held at the Shrine of Bl Joseph Vaz, Sancoale on coming Friday, June 14. The service will begin at 7.45 am followed by mass at 9 am. The sick will be prayed over for a Miraculous healing through the intercession of Bl Joseph Vaz, the Patron of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman. It will end by 11.30 a.m. Healing Service is conducted on every 2nd Friday of the month. Many people claim to have been healed and their prayers answered at this shrine. Friday Masses are as follows: 7.00 a.m. and 8.45 a.m. at the Sanctuary and evening Mass at 4.00 p.m at the Oratory Room. Terminally sick are prayed over on 1st, 3rd, and 4th Friday of every month from 10 am to 12 noon. Childless couples and pregnant mothers and kids are prayed over on every 3rd Sunday of the month at 9 am. Sunday masses are held at the Sanctuary at 7 am and 9 am and weekday at 7 am. Priests are available at the Sanctuary on Wednesday for confessions and spiritual guidance from 9 am to 12 noon.
