 Teachers feted at Margao

PANJIM: Rotary Club of Margao Midtown felicitated five teachers as a part of Teachers Day programme at BPS club. The chief guest was Dr I Bhanu Murthy, Principal of Damodar College. The teachers were felicitated in the presence of Club President Pravin Pai Raikar, Secretary Paresh Bene, project chairman Santosh George. The felicitated teachers are Suresh Tanawade, Cyril Fernandes, Roshan Shirwaikar, Neeta Prabhu Dessai, Philomena Sequeira.
Seminar on valuation of assets
PANJIM: The 4th national seminar on Valuation of Assets will be held at Ravindra Bhavan in Margao on October 18 and 19 from 9 am onwards. 
MP Francisco Sardinha will inaugurate the seminar, while Commissioner IT (Appeals) S S Jha will be the keynote speaker. Institution of Valuers (IOV) National President, (New Delhi) K Tyagarajan will also be present. The seminar will also be attended by practicing valuers, executives in financial institutions, national and international real estate consultants, project appraisers and those interested in pursuing a carrier in valuation.
Police outpost demanded at Mayem 
MAYEM: Villagers from Mayem have demanded a police outpost in Mayem Panchayat area to cater to about 8,000 residents. The villagers complained that they face hardships as they have to go to Bicholim for minor incidents comprising household conflicts, thefts and other incidents pertaining to law and order situation.
“We face acute problems, as we have no option but to go to Bicholim Police station and file our complaint. We need a police outpost at Mayem which will benefit all the villagers in a better manner,” said a villager, Sakharam Pednekar.
Kojagiri Pournima at Bicholim
MAYEM: Shri Shantadurga Laxminarayan Mutt Mandir, Atil Peth Bicholim, will organise Kojagiri Pournima celebrations in the temple premises on October 18. On the occasion, different religious and cultural programmes will be organised.
Four minor girls detained at Vasco 
VASCO: Vasco Police in coordination with Vasco Railway Police on Thursday detained four minor girls from a college in Uttarakhand, who reportedly boarded a wrong train while proceeding on a study tour to Kerala.
Speaking to the media, Mormugao DySP Laurence D’Souza said he received information from his seniors that the four minor girls were travelling to Vasco by the Amravati Express. D’Souza immediately directed the police staff at Vasco Police station and Vasco Railway Police station to cordon off the area and detain the four girls.
D’Souza further informed that during questioning of the minor girls in the presence of an NGO ‘Desterro Eves’ the girls revealed that about 75 students from the Uttarakhand college were on a study tour to Kerala.
The girls further informed that on October 16, they alighted from their train at Warangal Railway station to purchase some snacks and accidentally boarded a wrong train and reached Kachiguda Railway station in Karnataka.
“The girls on reaching Kachiguda Railway station realised that they are at the wrong place and boarded the Amravati Express train to Goa,” added D’Souza.
D’Souza said on Thursday his seniors got a tip-off that some minor girls are travelling on the Amravati Express and alerted him and acting on the tip-off and detained the four minor girls.
D’Souza further said a missing report was already being filed by the college management at Warangal Police station. The railway police have sent the four girls to the protection home and are in the process of contacting the college authorities and parents of all the girls.
Cortalim lad missing
VASCO: A minor boy from Thana-Cortalim has been reported missing.
Verna Police registered the complaint based of Aryasingh Maurya following the disappearance of his son, Rahul.
Police said the minor boy was last seen wearing a white-coloured shirt and a blue-coloured trousers. The boy is of medium height, dark complexion, about 14 years and has a scar of a surgery on his forehead.
Bus knocks down motorcyclist
PONDA: A 23-year-old motorcycle rider from Chimbel was injured after he was knocked down by a bus near Kundaim Industrial Estate gate, Kundaim-Ponda, on Thursday.
According to Ponda Police, the accident occurred at about 8.45 am when the Panjim-bound bus entered the single lane one-way road and knocked down motorcycle rider, Steve Vaz. Police said the two-wheeler rider escaped with minor injuries.
Ponda Police booked an offence against bus driver from Borim for driving in ‘no-entry zone’.
Minor accused of cheating
OLD GOA: A resident of Ribandar has accused a 17-year-old boy of cheating him.
According to Old Goa Police, Xavier D’Souza of Ribandar complained that the juvenile misappropriated cash of Rs 15,000 given by his wife to be delivered to him. The boy fled with the cash without delivering it to the complainant. ASI S Naik is investigating the case.
Cops probing Ponda crude bomb case
PONDA: Ponda Police has booked unidentified persons in connection with a crude bomb explosion that killed a domestic dog late Tuesday night near Mahalaxmi Temple, Bandora-Ponda.
According to reports, the incident occurred at about 10.30 pm near a house at Bandora.
Locals informed that a dog was found lying dead along the road. The villagers suspect that the crude bomb could be one similar to the ones used to kill wild boars; however, the source of the crude bomb is not known.
Ponda DySP Dinraj Govenkar and Ponda P I C L Patil visited the site. Ponda Police has booked unidentified persons under Section 429 of the IPC and 3 A of Explosive Substances Act 1908. Police is investigating the case.
Security agencies seek more time
PANJIM: The Security Association of Goa (SAG) is ‘shocked’ over the statement of the chief minister that he would close down all private security agencies except two licensed ones, if they do not take license within 15 days. 
In a press note issued here on Thursday, the SAG said, “The statement is unfortunate and dictatorial.”
The SAG said it requests the chief minister to give them three months to register under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act 2005 and to kindly instruct the Home Department to be helpful to all bonafide security agencies, applying for licence.

PANJIM: The coastal security exercise ‘Sagar Kavach Goa’ will be conducted on October 18 and 19. The exercise is to provide seaward cover along the Goa coast jointly by all security agencies from coastal belt. This time the services of Dristi Life Guards will also be utilized.  
World food day observed at Margao
MARGAO: Goacan observed World Food Day here on Wednesday with special focus on food safety, security with special emphasis on a nutritious diet.
Goacan coordinator Roland Martins told the media that customers have shown lot of enthusiasm to grow fruits and vegetables at their homes. “We are of the opinion that people should start growing fruits and vegetables at their homes. Today, we organised a demonstration of the various types of fruits and vegetables that can be grown at home with the help of compost generated from waste,” Martins the need to educate the consumer on waste composting.
The program also emphasized on the need to save food and avoid wastage.
Saraswati Morajkar passes away
PANJIM: Saraswati Morajkar of Betim passed away on October 17. She was 78 and was recently felicitated as a senior citizen at the hands of Social Welfare Minister Mahadev Naik. Saraswati is survived by her husband Gangaram Morajkar and three sons and two daughters. Morajkar is Chairman of Goa Chamber’s Consumer Affairs Committee and represents Chamber on Konkan Railway and Zonal Railway User’s Committees. 
Manguesh Mahajans guide released 
PANJIM: Guide for Shree Manguesh Mahajans ~ a book written by Chandranath V Dhume, son of temple historian, late Vinayak Narayan Shenav Dhume, published by Shree Manguesh Devasthan was released on the occasion of Dussehra. The book unfolds important aspects relating to the history of Lord Manguesh temple, rituals and religious traditions. The book also traces the journey of the GSB community from Bihar to Goa. The book has a foreword by Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni and a note by Hiren Kerkar. The book is available at the Manguesh temple.
