British woman commits suicide
CANACONA: A 47-year-old British national allegedly committed suicide at Patnem Beach in Canacona in the wee hours of Thursday.
According to Canacona Police, Catherine Shepherd was found in unconscious state in her rented room at about 1.30 am on Thursday and was rushed to Community Health Centre (CHC). However, the doctors declared Shepherd brought dead. Police registered a case of unnatural death.
Cunchelim local killed in accident
PORVORIM: A resident of Cunchelim-Colvale died in a road accident at Camurlim.
According to Mapusa Police, Sirish Naik of Cunchelim complained that a rickshaw (GA-03-T-1263), which was proceeding from Cunchelim towers, went off the main road and dashed against an electricity pole. Police further informed that the impact was such that Sirish’s father, who was an occupant in the rickshaw, flung out, causing him serious injuries. He died while undergoing medical treatment at GMC Hospital in Bambolim. PSI R A Kalagutkar is investigating the case.
British woman’s money stolen
CALANGUTE: A 63-year-old British national has accused a person of stealing her foreign currency, amounting to Rs 4.61 lakh, from a hotel in Candolim. According to Calangute Police, Anni Minter, presently residing at Candolim, complained that the accused, who had possession of the keys of her hotel room, stole 325 pounds and 5235 Euros by opening her suitcase, causing a loss of Rs 4,61,770. Calangute Police is investigating the case.
Cash from donation box stolen
OLD GOA: Burglars decamped with cash of about Rs 1,500 from two donation boxes at Shri Gomteshwar Devalaya, Old Goa.
According to Old Goa Police, Shivanand Shirodkar of St Cruz complained that between 10 pm on February 18 and 9 am on February 19, the burglars entered the Shri Gomteshwar Devalaya at Old Goa by breaking the window grill and decamped with cash of about Rs 1,500 from two donation boxes. Motorcycle stolen at Arpora
TIVIM: A motorcycle was reported stolen at Trinidade Vaddo, Arpora.
According to Anjuna Police, Joaquim Araujo of Arpora complained that some person stole motorcycle (GA-03-K-7339) from an open parking place at Trinidade Vado. Head Constable V Jadhav is investigating the case.
Briton cheated of Rs 1.50 lakh
CANACONA: A British national was cheated to the tune of Rs 1.50 lakh by three persons under of pretext of exporting jewellery and doing business with the Briton.
According to Canacona Police, Andrew Johnson complained the three accused persons cheated him to the tune of Rs 1.50 lakh under the pretext of exporting jewellery and doing business with him. PI Harish Madkaikar is investigating the case.
Usgao local accused of stone extraction
PONDA: A resident of Usgao has been accused of extracting laterite stones from a government property at Dharbandora.
According to Ponda Police, Sudhir Mandrekar, technical assistant of Directorate of Mines and Geology, complained that the accused trespassed into the government property at Dharbandora and extracted laterite stones. PSI Mohan Gaude is investigating the case.
Scooterist from Ponda injured
PONDA: A scooterist from Ponda was injured after he was knocked down by a truck near SSD Aluminium IDC at Ponda. One person has been arrested in this connection.
According to Ponda Police, accused Rafiq Patel of Karnataka was proceeding in his truck (GA-01-T-1050) when he dashed scooter (GA-05-A-8518), which was proceeding in the same direction, causing grievous injuries to the rider Laximan Raut. The accused was arrested and released on bail and police is investigating the case.
BSF officer’s son held with ganja
TIVIM: Anjuna Police arrested the 20-year-old son of a Border Security Force (BSF) officer from Bangalore on charges of possessing Ganja worth Rs 2.2 lakh at Nagoa-Arpora.
According to Anjuna PI Paresh Naik, a police team acted on a tip off and laid a trap, where they nabbed Praveen Kumar at Nagoa-Arpora. “The accused, who is the son of a BSF officer and who was working in Goa for six months, was in possession of 2.4 kgs of Ganja worth Rs 2.2 lakh,” said PI Naik. “This is the second such arrest in less than four days, as earlier a Nigerian national was nabbed with drugs at Vagator,” he added. Anjuna Police registered the case under Section 21 b of NDPS Act.
Tivim local’s body fished out from river
BICHOLIM: Bicholim Police on Thursday fished out the body of a 42-year-old man from Tivim from a river at Karapur.
According to police, Rajendra P Shirgaonkar was reported missing and his body was found floating in the river at Bandarwada-Karapur, Bicholim. The exact reason behind the death is not yet known, but police suspect that it could be either the case of drowning or suicide. PSI T P Walke is investigating the case.
BMC dy chief injured in mishap
BICHOLIM: Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) Deputy Chairperson Narayan Betkikar was injured in a mishap at Walshi-Bicholim.
According to sources, Betkikar was proceeding in his car when it was hit by an oncoming car at Walshi. Both the cars were damaged and Betkikar escaped with minor injuries to his hand.
Property worth Rs 1.60 lakh gutted
BICHOLIM: Property worth Rs 1.60 lakh was gutted in two separate fire incidents in the last two days in Bicholim. According to fire sources, cashew plantation belonging to Gomantak Daivadhnya Brahman Samaj was gutted at Kasarpal, causing loss of Rs 1 lakh, while in another incident dry grass belonging to Chandrakant Gawde from Sonshi Pale was gutted causing loss worth Rs 60,000. The fire fighters carried out the operation under the supervision of ASFO A S Dhawaskar.
Fr Nevel’s 50th birthday celebrated
PANJIM: The 50th birthday of Fr Nevil Lourdes Sacramento Gracias, a Konkani tiatr writer and composer was celebrated by the members of Konkani Songit Somajik Kala Kendr Caranzalem-Taleigao, along with the villagers of Caranzalem, members of St Vincent de Paul Society and nuns of surrounding schools. After the mass a small get-together was organized at Our Lady of Rosary Chapel Caranzalem hall. In the evening Manfa Music released his audio album ‘Tuzo Bhavart Zagoy ~ a collection of Konkani songs on the Ten Commandments, sung by Anthony San, Sylvester Vaz, Felcy, Jessica and Fr Nevil himself with music by Agostinho da Cruz. Fr Nevil is expected to come out with his 39th Lenten show from Ash Wednesday ~ ‘Hi Porza Ontannim Vakhannta.’
Guidance meet for Himalaya trekking

Inauguration of intercity train
PANJIML A new daily train ~ Train no 22636/22635 Mangalore-Madgaon-Mangalore, Superfast Intercity Express on Konkan Railway route, will be inaugurated by Minister for Railways on February 23. The Intercity Express will be flagged off from Mangalore at 3.30 pm and will run as a special train on the inaugural day. The train will pick up its regular run from February 24. During the regular run, the train will depart from Mangalore Central at 8.15 am and reach Madgaon at 2 pm. Train no 22635 Madgaon- Mangalore, it will depart from Madgaon at 4.15 and reach Mangalore Central at 10 pm. The train will halt at Canacona, Karwar, Kumta, Bhatkal, Mookambika Road Byndoor, Kundapura, Udupi, and Surathkal stations. The train will have one AC chair car, 14 chair cars, two luggage cum brake van, and one pantry car.
Use e-tablet to face challenges: Nilesh
CURCHOREM: Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral asked the students to develop their e-learning abilities and to face the challenges of the world. He was speaking at a function to distribute e-tablets to students in Curchorem constituency at Ravindra Bhavan hall, Curchorem.
Cabral said, “Government’s vision is to give better education to students by using latest technology, so that they are exposed to the modern techniques of learning.” Sanguem MLA Subash Phal Dessai said that “Goa is the first State in the country to give e-tablets to the students of high schools. All the government departments and municipal councils and panchayats are connected through the Internet.”
Bizz-Buzz held at Margao college
PANJIM: VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics, Margao organized a one-day State level inter-collegiate competition, Bizz-Buzz, on February 15, in the college campus, in association with Jayesh Prabhudessai Memorial Trust. Seven colleges participated in 17 events which covered business, entertainment and sports gaming. The winners of Jayesh Memorial Trust Rolling Trophy 2013-14 were Rosary College Navelim, and the runners up were Saraswat College, Mapusa.
