Woman held for theft
PONDA: Ponda Police on Sunday arrested a woman from Davorlim on charges of stealing purse containing cash of Rs 2,000 at Shiroda.
According to Ponda Police, Umesh Kamat of Shiroda complained that the accused Megha Morajkar stole the purse belonging to his wife containing cash of Rs 2,000. Police arrested the accused under Section 379 IPC and Head Constable S Gaonkar is investigating the case.
Two assaulted, JCB damaged
TIVIM: About seven persons have been accused of damaging a JCB and assaulting the JCB operator and owner at Devsu-Korgao, Pernem, on Sunday.
According to Pernem Police, Abdul Yassim Naik of Konadi-Korgao complained that a resident of Devsu and about six persons trespassed into his construction site and assaulted the JCB operator and owner, both native of Redy-Maharashtra with fist blows and kicks.
The complainant further stated that the accused persons also damaged wind shield of the JCB machine (GA-01-R-9571) by pelting stones and the motive is property issue. Police is investigating the case.
Body found floating
CURCHOREM: The body of a resident of Betalbhatim-Cacora was found floating in a well at Bethmoddi-Cacora on Sunday. According to Curchorem Police, the body of Simon Dias was found floating in the well and the deceased was reported missing.
The body was handed over to his relative and PSI Ashok P Desai is investigating the case.
Truck driver injured
COLLEM: A 21-year-old truck driver from Belgaum was injured after the truck fell into a gutter at Barkate-Mollem.
According to Collem Police, Siddangaude Patil was proceeding in his truck (KA-22-B-5693) from Ponda to Mollem when the driver lost control of the truck on NH4A slope curve road at Barkate. The truck went off the road and fell in the gutter and turned turtle, causing injuries to the driver.
Police is investigating the case.
Four tourists rescued
CALANGUTE/TIVIM: Four tourists were saved by lifeguards in separate incidents at Baga and Arambol on Monday.
According to reports, a 24-year-old tourist from Maharashtra entered a non-swim zone when he experienced an inward pull due to under water current which dragged him seawards. Lifeguards rushed towards the victim and brought him to the shore safely.
In another incident at sweet lake at Arambol, three tourists from Hyderabad entered a non-swim zone when lifeguards requested the trio to swim at knee level, but as the tourists were under the influence of alcohol they did not pay any heed. While swimming, they ventured in deeper water level and were unable to float. Lifeguard observed the victims in distress and rushed and brought one by one safely to the shore.
One arrested for theft
MARGAO: On a complaint from Vivan Dias, Vagulem, Curtorim the Maina Curtorim police registered offence of theft under section 457, 380 read with 34 IPC against Succur Pais, Camashet, Curtorim and a minor of Davorlim .
Police later arrested the accused Pais and recovered the stolen property which included TV sound system, woofer speaker and LG AC which were stolen by entering through the main door using the duplicate key in possession with minor. Pais who was produced before JMFC, Margao was released on a personel bail bond of Rs 10,000 and surety of like amount. Further investigation is being conducted by PSI PR Velip.
Labourer ends life
MARGAO: A 30-year old labourer, Salman Devuis Soreng, a native of Jharkhand and residing at Raia committed suicide on Sunday by hanging himself to a rafter. The police who were informed removed the body of the deceased and preserved at morgue for post-mortem. According to colleagues the decease was mentally disturbed. No foul play is suspected and a case of unnatural death has been registered at Maina Curtorim police station. PSI Devu G Mangaonkar is investigating.
Monti Dongor local arrested
MARGAO: Margao police on Monday evening arrested Rafik Tambac, resident of Monti Dongor, Margao who was wanted in a theft case. Police informed that Farzana Kantrali, had filed a complaint that the accused Tambac committed theft of her gas cylinder from her residence. In this regard an offence under section 380 IPC was registered and accuse was arrested by ASI KR Kotarkar.
Ponda flat burgled
PONDA: Burglars broke into a flat at Shantinagar-Ponda and decamped with some valuables on Sunday night.
The flat was closed since the last four days as the owner has gone to his native place at Kerala and the exact loss will be ascertained by the police when the flat owner is likely to reach Goa on Tuesday, Ponda PSI Gokuldas Malik said.
According to Ponda Police, the incident came to light on Monday morning when a neighbour noticed the door lock broken and door open.
The neighbour alerted the police, who rushed to the site and found the house ransacked. The cupboards were open as the owner had forgotten to secure the cupboard keys, which were lying in the flat.
Police registered a complaint against unknown persons and is investigating the case.
Two hurt in Ponda mishap
PONDA: Two youth were seriously injured when their motorcycle dashed against a roadside tree at Khandepar-Ponda, on Monday morning.
According to Ponda Police, Virat Gupta (19), who was riding the motorcycle (GA-07-F-1425), and pillion rider, Deepak Yadav (19), had come down to Goa for a holiday and were proceeding from Panjim towards Mollem.
Police further informed that when they reached near Opa junction at Khandepar, Gupta lost control of the two-wheeler and dashed against the roadside tree. Gupta sustained head injury and Yadav was injured and have been admitted to GMC Hospital in Bambolim.
Ponda Police is investigating the case.
Dealing with bullying, assertively
PANJIM: The Diocesan Family Service Centre (DFSC) in association with Catenian, Dona Paula Circle 356, organized a one-day workshop on dealing with bullying, assertively, for 26 counsellors on February 23, at Stella Maris Chapel hall Mira Mar. The facilitator, James O’Gorman, from UK, discussed the different forms of bullying from situational bullying to cyber bullying, tactics used by bullies and focused on the impact of bullying.
The need to deal with bullying assertively was brought out through role plays and case studies. The facilitator also brought in the dimension of promoting values, in specific a paradigm shift from ME to WE. In the final part of the workshop the participants proposed various means through which the paradigm shift could come about.
Earlier, Fr Arnold Pinto welcomed the gathering and invoked God’s blessing. Keynote speaker Dr Ubaldina Noronha said that incidence of bullying is much more than what teachers generally believe and outlined that the consequences of bullying are varied.
Fr Kenneth Teles, Director of DFSC presented certificates to participants. Pascal Pinto, a Catenian proposed a vote of thanks. Bela Azavedo compered the programme.

Agonda music school holds concert
CANACONA: St Anne’s Music School, Agonda, recently organised its fifth annual concert in the village. The entire music concert was coordinated by musician and maestro, St Anne’s Music School, Agonda, Director Fr Peter Cardozo, while the students of grade-I performed on the occasion.
The chief guest for the concert was Cabo-De-Rama Parish Priest Fr Abil Fernandes, while Agonda Parish Priest Fr Romeo D’Silva was also present. Fr Peter Cardozo in his welcome address said students should have perseverance, love and dedication to attain and excel in this noble fine art of music.
Science Day held at valpoi school
VALPOI: Science Teachers Committee of Unity High School observed National Science Day with a theme ‘India’s Mission to Mars’ by organising various competitions. Vice Chairman Mubarak Ali Khan was the chief guest, while PTA Chairman Banudas Powar, Headmaster Mustufa Aga, teachers Parveen Aga and Vinayak Sacroji were present. The portrait of Sir C V Raman was garlanded.
Ali Khan said with the advancement of science and technology, the world progresses.
Mustufa Aga and Sacroji also spoke. Students exhibited wallpaper, gave presentation on the topic ‘My dream to Mars’ and expressed importance of technology through monologue. Inter class science quiz and essay writing competitions were also organised.
Legal aid cell programme at Guirim
PANJIM: The members of the Guirim Free Legal Aid Cell set-up and managed by VM Salgaoncar College of Law, Mira Mar, recently organised a major programme on Saturday at St Diago’s church complex, Guirim. The speaker, Prof Nagesh Kolvalkar, spoke on the Right to Information Act. He was accompanied by Prof Aamod Shirali and Fr Emidio Pinto. Prof Kolvalkar explained the procedures of how information can be obtained under the RTI. He answered queries from the public thus simplifying the procedures for them. Pranisha P Korgaonkar, the cell-incharge and Milena Souza, the deputy in-charge co-ordinated the programme. Kewal Sawant highlighted the legal aid cell’s activities.
