Our people have been bearing the ill effects of food adulteration for a long time. Adulterated food is meant to be slow poison.
Earlier, the only thing that one heard was water being added to milk which, in fact, was dilution not exactly adulteration. In the recent past, several types of adulteration have been in the news — saw dust mixed with tea powder; chalk powder solution added to milk and tissue paper used in the making of milk based sweets.
Lately adulteration has been taken to an altogether new level. Cows are injected with antibiotics to produce more milk and pesticides are used in poultry products. Adulteration has grown in dangerous proportions. There seems to be no respect for human life. The sole aim is to make fast money. It is unthinkable, that, after being forced to pay high prices, people are given spurious food items that can cause immense harm.
The time has come to say enough is enough. Government is reported to be working on making laws more stringent. These laws must be enforced without fear or favour. Those who play with the health and lives of people should be dealt with ruthlessly.
