Erect side-walls for Agonda’s Borim-bridge
It was shocking to read (O Heraldo November 7, 2023) that the new Borim-bridge at Dhavalkhajan, Agonda, has no safety side walls. This bridge which replaced the old dangling footbridge, was inaugurated last year by the Chief Minister. Reportedly, the Public Works Department (PWD) had then assured that the side walls would be constructed in six months. Yet, till now there are no signs of the side walls despite several requests by the people to the local MLA who is also the Assembly Speaker and to the PWD, Canacona.

The CM should have refrained from opening the bridge on seeing that the side walls were missing and issued a deadline of three months to complete the task. As a precautionary measures, the PWD could now erect temporary railing and danger signs till the walls are built. Where were the PWD’s supervisors/engineers when the bridge was coming up?

Investigate hit-and-run cases for murder
In a shocking case of drunken driving, the owner of a Vagator resort was reportedly crushed to death by a drunken driver of the Haryana registered SUV at top speed in her resort property. It seems that citizens are not safe from drunk drivers even within their own property. There have been several instances of drunken driving, resulting in accidents and hit-and-run cases that have been reported in the State.
Hitting someone with the intention of committing murder could be a possible motive if it is a hit-and-run case. In the case of drunken driving the culprit responsible for the accident which ends in fatality could even get away mildly for rash and negligent driving even if murder was the motive. Hence it seems prudent to investigate any road accident which results in life-threatening injuries to the victim or fatality as attempt-to-murder or murder also as the case may be.

Killer drunk tourists should be punished
The precious life loss of innocent resort owner Mary Remy Albuquerque was lost and two other staff were injured by a criminal drunk culprit. I myself have encountered many such drunk tourists in our State while driving on Goan roads, which could lead to death. The Goa traffic police work hard every day in hot weather on the roads and do a good job.
They should check all tourists for drugs and alcohol and check them even in early morning hours and arrest them so that such incidents should not take place. This is a criminal act and Government of Goa should have no mercy in booking cases and sentence accused to life, before we lose our loved ones. Also the foreigner woman who was in the car should be investigated for her motive.

Goa is capable of organising Nat’l Games
Although the 37th National Games have concluded, there are complaints on the quality of food provided and other issues during the event. However the main complaint was that no provisions were made for the possibility of sudden rains on November 7 and 8 which created a mess at various grounds and centres. Quick solution and action taken by authorities was to be appreciated. Organising such big event with 10,000 participants is not a simple thing and easy task.
The 37th National Games were a big success and has proven Goa can do it. The credit should go to all the team and organising committee under the leadership of Sports Minister Govind Gaude. Inspite of all the criticism he did not lose his hope. The Goans also got opportunity to perform and won medals which made the State proud.

Kudos to Goans for winning medals in National games
Congratulations to our Goenkar medal winners at the 37th National Games for winning so many medals for the State of Goa. Yes it’s a proud moment for Goans specially the younger generation who practiced daily, kept fit and healthy and today their hard work got paid as they made their parents and Goans proud.
However, instead of giving a chance to Goans, the authorities have cheated by putting outsiders to compete for Goa when we already have talented sports persons in Goa. Thanks to our sports clubs in Goa who have supported their own village sports persons to show talent in them and win gold, silver and bronze medal for Goa. Students should study and learn various types of sports in school which they can convert into a career. Government should give government jobs to the sports persons who has made Goa and Goans proud. Parents have sacrifice a lot to see their child reach success. Requesting the Government of Goa not to cheat by putting outsiders to represent Goa.

Hope the trapped labourers survive
Our thoughts and prayers are with the forty labourers trapped in an under-construction tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district. The state disaster relief force inserted an oxygen pipe into the collapsed tunnel to help those trapped to breathe. About 160 rescuers are trying to reach the trapped labourers with the help of drilling equipment and excavators. We hope that the operation will be successful with no fatalities.

Time to celebrate our children
On November 14, Children’s Day, I would like to emphasise the importance of welfare, education and a safe and happy childhood for children globally. Children have a right to education, to enjoy their childhood playing, studying and eating and not working as child labourers. We should abstain from hiring children as labourers of any kind. Parents also should try to be friendly with their children to understand their needs and respond to them in the best way possible.
Having said that, I would also like to say that even children hold the responsibility to learn moral values from their parents, learn sincerely from their schools and to develop communicative, social and other personality skills by involving in various social, humanitarian and environmental events and campaigns. After all, the children of today are the leaders of tomorrow. The future of our nation is in our hands. Teaching starts in the home and we, as parents, must realise that the onus is on us to provide the right environment and instil the right teaching from the very start.
