Live up to ‘we serve the people’ slogan
Sometime ago, I received a message from my bank that my account needed to be KYC compliant or else it would be frozen. I was sure that my account was active and updated, but because of the message, I visited the bank and waited for 10 minutes. On checking my account, the official confirmed that it was KYC compliant. She said this message was sent to everyone and that I should ignore it.

Last week, I received a similar message from UIDAI that my Aadhaar Card needed to be updated by producing proof of address and identification. After I visited the Aadhaar Centre with the documents, I was told that my Aadhaar Card was updated and to ignore the message since it was sent to all. For the sake of a few people whose accounts or cards are not updated, all are called to the bank or Centre.
The employees working for these service providers should be concerned about the convenience of the people rather than their own. They should live up to their slogans “we serve the people”, “customer satisfaction is our motto” and so on.

Let women function without any pressure
The world celebrates International Women’s Day on March 8, each year paying attention to women’s rights movement and issues such as violence and abuse against women. The day was observed as Women’s Day after labour movement by socialist party in America, New York city on February 28, 1908 and then in Europe. International Women’s Day is a public holiday in some countries and observed socially or locally to celebrate achievements of women. It became mainstream holiday when United Nations adopted the day in 1977. United Nations declared 2015 theme as “Empowering women, empowering humanity”. In India, Women’s Day is celebrated on February 13, on the birthday anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, a pioneer in advocating women’s rights. Today, we can see women’s empowerment in every field and also with reservation of seats to contest gram panchayat and general elections. In sports, science and technology and politics, women have played a vital role right from P T Usha, Vijaya Laxmi Pandit, Annie Besant, Madame Curie, Florence Nightingale, Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher, Lady Diana to New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. The women’s role in politics is vital across the globe and in India too, we saw how late J Jayalalithaa ruled the party in Chennai. We also have Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi , Mamata Banerjee in Bengal, Mayawati in UP and Today’s president of India Droupadi Murmu. Women’s empowerment can bring changes in every field as they have much patience and understanding the situation given. Women’s Day celebration can be successful only if they are given opportunities in the fields and a free hand to function without any pressure.

Empower women
In Goa, people have always lived in unity and harmony. People with a broad mindset have always encouraged each other to do their best. However, till today there are few women, who face torture, abuse. As the world celebrates Women’s Day, the only question which comes to mind is – Do we treat our mother, sister, wife, daughter and a friend appropriately?
We have always seen that a mother, a wife, a daughter and a sister have been the strong foundation in the society. Today, we all need to have a broad mindset and encourage our daughters to work hard and fulfil their desires. We should protect them and not misbehave with them. With the growth and success of a girl child, it will not only make the family proud, but will also contribute to the overall development of the country where all are treated with equity and have the freedom to fulfil our dreams. However, there are still few people, who think girls should not be allowed to move out and work. If we treat each other equally and help all to grow, we can all contribute to the overall development of the country and thus live a happy and successful life. We need to respect all women.

Always respect women
Each year on March 8 we celebrate International Women’s Day. It is a day we celebrate how much women have achieved. We celebrate the many ways that women have advanced in various careers and roles as independent, autonomous persons able to strive toward their full potential. We celebrate the many creative and innovative ways that women are successfully contributing to the global community.
Women are the beautiful creation of God! They are the angels on the earth who make our life a wonderful experience all together. Imagining life without a woman is quite hard-hitting. This angel shakes the cradle with one hand and the earth with the other. The fact is that all the great people of the world are born from the womb of a woman and it is a woman from whom those great people have taken their initial teachings. And that is the reason we have always emphasised upon giving due respect to women in their life. And that is why Women’s Day is celebrated with so much of zeal and fanfare all over the world.

Kudos to Chanu
Kudos to India’s weightlifting pride, the petite Saikhom Mirabai Chanu for bagging the 2022 “BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year” award for the second consecutive time. The 28-year-old weightlifter from Manipur has had a string of superb performances to her name in the last decade beginning from the 2014 Commonwealth Games at
Glasgow.
The icing on the cake was the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Silver in the 49 kg though the 2017 World Championship Gold medal winning performance at Anaheim, USA was a stunning show. The ultimate aim of the golden girl of Indian women’s weightlifting, who is also the 2022 Commonwealth Gold medallist, is to bag gold for India in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Chanu will be aiming at that elusive Asian Games medal at Hangzhou this year.

If a ‘Tiger Park’, why not a ‘Turtle Beach’
In a major disappointment to the visitors, especially children visiting the Bondla Zoo, the State government has decided not to procure a tiger pair to introduce in the zoo, but instead is contemplating to establish a first-of-its kind ‘Tiger Park’ in and around the protected areas of Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary. If the government is keen to establish a tiger park in the State then much more needs to be done to preserve the nesting sites of the Olive Ridley Turtles on our beaches. It is learnt that a veteran ecologist has suggested ‘turtle tourism’ for Goa in order to encourage public participation in conservation of the Olive Ridley sea turtles coming to Goa for nesting and the government must take all stakeholders into confidence. It is pertinent to note that the turtle nesting period clashes with the peak tourism season in Goa. If there is a proposal for a tiger park, why can’t there be a ‘turtle beach’ or a part of the beach exclusively reserved for the Olive Ridley Turtles. This area should be out-of-bounds for the tourists and there should be a total ban on loud music being played in the vicinity. This will encourage more of these majestic creatures to come to our beaches for nesting. If not, the Olive Ridley Turtle could venture to other beaches in the country for laying eggs
instead of coming to the beaches in the State and Goa will be the ultimate loser.
