Views and counter views are expressed by all and sundry over Mr. Parrikar’s shifting to Delhi. The questions asked are whether his absence will create a leadership vacuum and whether the BJP government in Goa will be able to deliver in his absence. There is no denying the fact that Mr. Parrikar is a talented leader and an able administrator but many a time he functioned as a dominating leader, dwarfing his cabinet colleagues and even answering questions on their behalf in the Assembly.
Due to this style of functioning he stood like a banyan tree which allows nothing to grow under itself. When any government is over-dependent on one leader, instead of functioning as a team, it is bound to face problems in such leader’s absence.
We have seen the best example of this in the recently concluded Football World Cup tournament which one fan summed up very well in these words “Brazil had Neymar, Argentina had Messi but Germany had a team. The German team won in style”. We hope the BJP government will take up the challenge and continue to deliver.
