Nigerian granted bail in visa case
MARGAO: South Goa additional district and sessions judge, Vincent D’Silva granted conditional bail to accused Hycinth Oceani Usaigur, 39, a Nigerian national, who was arrested under sections of the Passport Act and Foreigners Order 1948 and Foreigners Act 1946. The court ordered that accused be released on a personal bail bond of Rs 30,000 with one surety of like amount and directed that accused report to Vasco police for 5 days from 10 am to 1 pm and afterwards once a week until filing of charge sheet. Accused Usaigur was arrested by police at Dabolim airport on June 10 at 4 am upon complaint filed by Jitendra B Yadav, Immigration Assistant, Bureau of Immigration- Dabolim that the accused while intending to depart to Qatar was found with a forged Visa.

Plaint of assault at Merces
OLD GOA: Two persons were injured after they were assaulted by some persons at Merces on Sunday. According to Old Goa Police, Mahammad Salim Shaikh of Merces complained that three accused persons abused and assaulted him and his labourer, Washim Ahmed, with wooden sticks and choppers, causing injuries. Head Constable S Gaude is investigating the case.
Minor injured in accident at Vasco
VASCO: A minor girl was injured after she was knocked down by a car at Varunapuri-Mangor, Vasco, on Monday. The car also struck a handcart and two motorcycles, before crashing down on the rooftop of a house by the road. According to an eye witness, the driver of the car (GA-06-D-7143) after negotiating a turn at Varunapuri lost control of the vehicle and knocked down a handcart, two motorcycles parked on the shoulder of the four-lane highway and the minor girl before it turned turtle and landed on the roof of a house. The eye witness further informed that the minor girl along with her mother was on her way home when the accident occurred. The girl sustained injuries to her head, hand and back. “The girl was moved in a private vehicle to Chicalim Cottage Hospital, from where she was referred to the GMC Hospital,” said the eye witness. Speaking to Herald, the car driver, Adv Albino Vales, said he didn’t know what happened and found his car on the rooftop of the house. He escaped without injuries. Vasco Police said the girl was being treated at the GMC and a case of accident has been registered and police is investigating.
Collem local found dead in river
COLLEM: The body of a 35-year-old man from Pimpulmol-Collem was found floating in the Dudhsagar river at Metalwadda-Collem on Sunday. According to Collem Police, the body of Rajesh Naik was sent to GMC in Bambolim for post-mortem. PSI S Lokre is investigating the case.
Theft at Arambol house
PERNEM: Household articles worth about Rs 69,000 were stolen from a house at Madhlawada-Arambol. According to Pernem Police, Baburao Harmalkar of Madhlawada-Arambol complained that between 5.30 pm on June 15 and 9.30 am on June 22, some person entered his house by break opening the lock of the back door and stole household articles worth about Rs 69,000. Drowned youth’s body found
CALANGUTE: The body of a youth from Rajasthan, who was feared drowned at Sinquerim beach, was found on Sunday. According to Calangute Police, the body of Julendra Kumar (24) was found floating in the sea off Sinquerim. The body was sent at GMC in Bambolim for autopsy. PSI S Pednekar is investigating the case.
Theft at house in Candolim
CALANGUTE: Laptop, mobile phone, cash and other items worth about Rs 1.08 lakh were stolen from a house at Sauzawado-Candolim on Sunday. According to Calangute Police, Luke De Souza of Sauzawado-Candolim complained that between 3 am and 7.30 am, some persons entered his house by removing ventilator glass of the bathroom/toilet and decamped with laptop, mobile phone, and wallet containing cash of Rs 8,000, driving licence, PAN card, etc, all worth about Rs 1.08 lakh. PSI S Pednekar is investigating.
Siolim resident assaulted
MAPUSA: A resident of Marna-Siolim was injured after he was assaulted by the owner of a taxi motorcycle. According to Mapusa Police, William Fernandes of Marna complained that the accused, owner of taxi motorcycle, without any reason assaulted his father, Julio, with a hard object, causing him serious injuries. HC S Shetye is investigating.
Family retreat at Panjim
PANJIM: Jesus Centre will conduct a three-day family renewal retreat in English and Konkani from June 25 to 27, between 4 pm to 7.30 pm at Jesus Centre Hall, on the second floor, Alfran Plaza, Panjim. The retreat will consist of Rosary, praise and worship, Word of God, confessions, mass and Eucharistic Adoration. The retreat will be led by Fr Jose D’Costa, spiritual guide of Jesus Centre. The same will be held in the 4th week of every month, beginning from June.
Mediation centre inaugurated
PANJIM: Goa Community Mediation centre was inaugurated by Justice Madan Lokur at the Bar Association Hall in the High Court premises. A brochure was also released. Justice Lokur pointed out the importance of community mediation. He said mediation can lead to a solution to various issues and not just related to dispute and can provide a win win solution to both parties. Advocate Anil Xavier, President, IIAM said mediation should be offered as a choice in the initial stage itself. Advocate E O Mendes said mediation not only settles the dispute but can also ensure that no future dispute arises. Others who spoke were George Ninan and Advocate S U Bhobe. The programme was compered by Advocate Gaurish Agni.
Afghan soldiers trained in Panjim
PANJIM: The 2 Signal Training Centre is hosting 26 officers and sergeants of the Afghan National Army for specialist military training for 12 weeks. They were trained on modern communication technologies and equipment. The Afghan soldiers were enamoured by the beauty of Goa. Most saw the sea for the first time in their lives. They spent time on the beaches and visited cultural sites and also participated in religious functions.
Jose Philip threatens agitation
VASCO: Former minister Jose Philip D’Souza on Monday threatened to stage an agitation if the government failed to provide uninterrupted water and power supply within six months. Addressing a news conference, D’Souza stated that during the Congress government, the BJP along with its youth wing and mahila mandals used to come on the streets even for silly reasons. “During the last two-and-half years of BJP rule, there have been erratic power and water supply and the road near Madina Masjid is full of potholes and the government has turned a blind eye,” said D’Souza and said further that despite constructing underground reservoir at INS Gomantak, the PWD has failed to utilise the infrastructure which could have provided 24-hour water supply to the residents of Vasco.
Pilgao dy sarpanch ousted from office
MAYEM: Pilgao Deputy Sarpanch Babaji Gaonkar was voted out of office in a no-confidence motion moved by four panchas. The motion was passed by 4-0 votes and Ashish Gaonkar was the observer for the meeting. Panchayat Secretary Hanumant Borkar and other members Jyoti Vengurlekar and Anil Naik were also present. Babaji Gaonkar said he was allotted tenure of two-and-half years, which was not over yet and as such, questioned the motion served against him. On the other hand, another panchayat member, Swapnil Fadte, a signatory to the no-trust motion, claimed that Gaonkar had been allotted a period of two years
Nirmala Institute general body meet
PANJIM: The Alumni Association general body meeting of Nirmla Institute of Education will be held on June 25, at 3.30 pm in the College hall. CME on pursuit of excellence by mastery
PANJIM: The Indian Academy of Cytologists in collaboration with the Goa Medical College Bambolim will organise a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on ‘Pursuit of Excellence by Mastery’ on June 26 at 3 pm in lecture hall no I, GMC College building. The speaker will be Mahendra Caculo, chartered engineer, consultant valuator, Margao and a member of the Indian Council of Arbitration. The CME is coordinated and will be chaired by Dr R G Wiseman Pinto. The Goa Medical Council has given CME accreditation with one CME credit and is open to doctors.
Italian certificate courses at GU
PANJIM: The faculty of Languages and Literature, Goa University, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy Cultural Centre, New Delhi, will conduct basic Italian language certificate course, level A1 (100 hours). The course is compatible with the Common European Framework of Reference levels for languages: learning, teaching, assessment. The minimum qualification is Class XII of Goa Board. Classes will be conducted thrice weekly on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Goa University campus from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm. The course starts on July 7 and ends on November 14. Application forms are available in the Department of Portuguese and Lusophones Studies, Goa University. Prof Chiara Iuzzolini will conduct the courses.
