Son attacks father, mother
MARGAO: Margao police on Saturday registered an offence of attempt to murder against a son for a murderous assault on both his father and mother aged 75 years at Borda.
Margao police station in-charge PI Sudesh Naik informed that accused son Abdul Munaf allegedly assaulted his mother Salima Bi first with a wooden danda on her head with the alleged intention to kill her, causing bleeding injuries. After attacking his mother, the son went for his father, 75-year-old Ayub Khan.
PI Naik said the accused later rode his Passion motorcycle in a no-entry zone and intentionally dashed against his father’s Dio scooter in order to allegedly kill him. The police said the accused later assaulted the father with a walker on his head, causing bleeding injuries.
PI Naik has attributed the incident to an issue over property. PSI Melson Colaco is investigating the case registered under section 307 of the IPC.
Scooters distributed under MPLAD
MARGAO: South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Saturday distributed scooters for handicapped persons hailing from Rumdamol village.
At a function held at the AIM school on Saturday morning, the MP handed over keys to around 15 handicapped persons. The scooters have been handed over to the beneficiaries under the MPLAD scheme.
The MP later told the media that he would make provision for distribution of scooters to the handicapped in January next year. “When I launched this scheme of providing scooters to the handicapped, my office had received only a few applications. But now there are a whole lot of applications”, he said.
Bal Rath launched at Navelim
PANJIM: Minister for Fisheries Avertano Furtado, launched three buses under the Bal Rath Scheme for students of Rosary High School, Navelim. Speaking on the occasion he said the need of school buses has been felt as vehicular traffic has increased manifold and as such, walking along the roads has become dangerous. He reminded the children of his school days when he used to walk to school as these facilities were not available. He offered his support to the school management and asked them to avail of various government schemes in force. He expressed thanks to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for extending necessary help in sanctioning the buses at very short notice and also for supporting overall development of Navelim Constituency. Later on at Davorlim, he launched the process of four laning of the road from Ashiana Park. Earlier in the day he distributed 138 Griha Aadhar sanction letters to the beneficiaries in Navelim Constituency.
Saraswat food fest in January
PANJIM: Goa Saraswat Samaj will be conducting the annual Saraswat Food and Cultural Festival-2014 on January 24, 25 and 26, 2014 at Darya Sangam Kala Academy, Panjim. The festival is organized in collaboration with Tiswadi Saraswat Samaj. PANJIM: TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, announced the 2013 Traveller’s Choice Awards for all-inclusive resorts. The awards recognize a total of 100 properties, including the top 25 in the world. All-inclusive resorts are defined as those properties featuring an assortment of amenities, sports facilities, meals and leisure activities that are included in the nightly rate. The only resort from India to have made it to the list is Heritage Village Club Goa, which has been ranked No 10 in the Top 10 all inclusive resorts in Asia.
ITI trainees given laptops
PANJIM: A laptop distribution function was held at Pernem Govt ITI on November 22 at the hands of Minister of Co-Operation, Factories and Boilers and Craftsmen Training Deepak Dhavlikar. Other dignitaries present were State Director of Craftsmen Training Alexio F Da Costa, Principal of Pernem Govt ITI Jose Mascarenhas, IMC member M J Patil, Chairman PMC Vasudev Deshprabhu. Mascarenhas welcomed the gathering and D Y Karekar, group instructor, proposed the vote of thanks. Trainees, who had topped in their respective trades in the recently held NCVT exams, were felicitated. Deshprabhu advised the trainees to use laptops to connect to the world and attain gainful information. Dhavlikar encouraged the trainees to concentrate on attaining skills, saying that the recession in the industry will end soon after which trainees will have great scope in the industry for employment. The function was compered by Vishanti Saptoji and Swapnil Desai.
Udaan from November 27
PANJIM: The Directorate of Art and Culture in collaboration with West Zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur will organize Udaan ~ a programme dedicated to differently abled children artists on November 27, at Main Hall, Institute Menezes Braganza, Panjim, at 4 pm and on November 28 at Ravindra Bhavan, Curchorem at 4 pm. About 100 differently abled children artists from Rajasthan, Gujarat and from Goa will be participating. The children will perform cultural programmes.
Laterite stones seized at Sancoale
VASCO: The mines department on Saturday seized laterite stones and mud that were illegally stacked on comunidade property near the Kala Bhavan at Sancoale, after a police complaint regarding the illegal stacking of the material was filed with the Verna police.
According to reports, the Sancoale Comunidade on November 18 had lodged a police complaint accusing a contractor of illegally stacking laterite stones and mud in comunidade property near the Kala Bhavan at Sancoale.
In this regard, the Verna police had registered an offence against the contractor under the Goa Land Act. Acting on the Sancoale Comunidade complaint, the mines department seized the material on Saturday.
Police sources were unable to determine the quantum of the material seized, but added that the Verna police are investigating the case.
Mass in Malayalam at Old Goa today
VALPOI: The Malayalam mass in the Syro-Malabar Catholic rite will be celebrated at Bom Jesus Basilica at 12.30 pm on November 24, the occasion of the Novena of St Francis Xavier. The President of the Central Committee of the Syro-Malabar Catholics Church A C Thomas Ethakkat (Benny), Fr Thomas Moolechalil and Fr Thomas Kalari Parambil, the two priests in-charge of Syro Malabar Catholic Church in Goa, have invited the people to attend the mass, states a press note.
Feast at Ponda chapel today

Menezes Braganza lecture series begins
PANJIM: Luis de Menezes Bragança provided the ideological backup for the Goa’s freedom struggle to be part of India’s freedom struggle said Dr Sushila Sawant Mendes while delivering the inaugural lecture in the lecture series to mark the golden jubilee celebration of naming of the institute after the Luis de Menezes Bragança. She said that he was a free thinker and a democrat who was prepared to take a different stand in different circumstances.
She further stated that despite the fact Luis de Menezes Bragança wrote only in Portuguese, he influenced a generation of freedom fighters who carried the progressive thought which was bolstered by the support of Ram Monahar Lohia and the Pune based Goa Vimonchan Sahayak Samiti. Padmashri Maria Aurora Couto presided over the lecture and said Goa has lost the intellectual trust that existed during the times of Luis de Menezes Bragança. Canacona Congress meet on Nov 27
CANACONA: Amid growing dissent over the GPCC president’s decision to replace block presidents with new faces, Canacona Block Congress Committee has convened a meeting on November 27.
In a press note, Canacona Block Congress Committee president Elvis Fernandes has convened a block meeting at Municipal Hall, Chaudi, on November 27. “All the block members are requested to remain present for the meeting,” informed Fernandes.
It may be recalled that widespread discontent is brewing among the local Congress leaders following the replacement of certain block presidents, particularly in South Goa by Congress party president Subash Shirodkar.

NSS camp held at Sal-Bicholim
BICHOLIM: About 150 students of Purushottam Walawalkar Higher Secondary, Khorlim-Mapusa, along with the doctors from Bicholim Primary Health Centre carried out an awareness campaign regarding malaria and other health-related issues at Sal-Bicholim.
The students informed villagers what steps they could take to maintain good health and also avoid the spread of malaria. Talks and workshops were also conducted during the six-day NSS camp. Speakers at the programme included Somu Rao (superstitions), Phadke (Goa’s freedom struggle), Uday Naik (safeguard from cyber crime), Samir Pawaskar (photography), Vishnu Chiplunkar (environment) and Sandesh Barazankar (self defence). Talk on the importance of yoga and ayurveda was also given at the camp.
Programme officer, Laxman Parab Gaonkar, along with Sharan Madgaonkar, Divisha Satoskar, Arvind Gawde, Bhagwan Banawlikar, Krishna Parwar and others guided.
Annual convention on November 30
PANJIM: The annual convention and prize distribution ceremony of the State-level contests held for students, teachers and parents will be organized by Shikshak Vikas Parishad at Manikbai hall, Shivanathi, Shiroda, on November 30. Registration will be from 8.30 am to 9.30 am and the inaugural function and prize distribution from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm.
