NSS mega national integration camp
PANJIM: The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs will organize selection trails on November 30 at Youth Hostel, Miramar, from 10 am onwards to select outstanding NSS volunteers to participate in the NSS Mega Camp of 12 days from December 13 to 24, 2013, at Central University, Tejpur, Assam. Around 400 NSS volunteers and 40 contingent leaders will participate in the camp. From Goa, a team of 12 NSS volunteers (6 males and 6 females), along with one female contingent Leader, will leave Goa and report at Guwahati, Railway Station, Assam, on December 13. Interested NSS volunteers have to report to Laxmidas Mangeshker, APEO, NSS In-charge (9822484874) at 9.30 am at the above-mentioned venue and date. NSS volunteers who have attended pre-RD camp 2013-14 are not eligible for this selection trial.
Shopping festival at Margao
PANJIM: Big Shopping Festival, the lifestyle shopping festival exhibition, is underway at SGPDA Ground, Margao. This exhibition has come to Goa for the first time and is presented by Orange Couches from Mumbai. There is a presence of over 90 stalls with products like lazy bags, oval furniture, Italian blankets, imported flowers, zatpat sofas, magic mops, induction cookers, imported ceramic crockery, Malaysian imported watches, imported leather bags, shoes, jewellery, fitness equipments, healthcare items, etc. The exhibition will be open to the public till December 2 from 10.30 am to 9 pm.
Karavali festival concludes
POINGUINIM: The three-day Karavali festival organised at Karwar concluded on Sunday.
Over 3 lakh people attended the festival and people from neighbouring states and also foreign tourists witnessed many cultural shows that were performed by renowned artistes from Karwar and all over the country at the Rabindranath Tagore beach.
Competitions were held in various sports like swimming, athletics, flower arrangements, culinary items, drawing, wrestling, body building and other fields where many people participated and were given prizes.
Over 200 stalls were erected for exhibitions and sale of kitchen items, decorative items, fancy clothes, food and beverages and amusement park for children.
Dy CM to inaugurate camp
PANJIM: Deputy Chief Minister Francisco D’Souza will inaugurate the three-day scouts and guides patrol leaders’ camp of the Tiswadi district at the Bal Bharati Vidhya Mandir, Ribandar, on November 28 at 11am.
AIDS awareness workshop held
PANJIM: JCI Dabolim in association with NGOs Hum Sath and Pehchan organized an AIDS awareness program for students of Keshav Smurthi Higher Secondary School for vocational section. The key facts which were highlighted during the workshop were how to prevent AIDS, its causes, symptoms and basically the social treatment of the person suffering from AIDS. A presentation was shown to students with many examples which made their learning easy.
Teacher Shankar Goankar welcomed everybody and stressed on the need to create more awareness among the general public about AIDS and its effects.
The speakers Lal Beig (co-ordinator for Hum Sath) and Thakur (co-ordinator for Pehchan) had an informative interactive session with students clearing doubts raised by them. The project in charge for the program was Prabhu Lamani. Kishor Surilkar compered, while Mahesh Bhandari proposed the vote of thanks.
Tenants resolve to form new assn
CHORAO: Most tenants of Varona-Patramon-Sarel Khazan Tenant Association have resolved to form a separate association, to be known as the ‘Patramona-Sarel Tenant Khazan Association’, at Madel-Chorao.
The members took the decision at a general body meeting convened under the chairmanship of Varona-Patramon-Sarel Khazan Tenant Association Ganesh Govenkar at Devkikrishna Devathan hall, Chorao, on Sunday.
Majority of the tenants stated that the present body, Varona-Patramon-Sarel Tenant Association, should be separated to form another association for the Patramon-Sarel Khazan tenants.
“It was also resolved that if Patrmona-Sarel Tenant fails to form a new association, then they will ask Tiswadi mamlatdar to appoint administrator,” said Govenkar.
Protest against industrial estate
CANACONA: In their ongoing opposition to the proposed industrial estate on Kulti plateau, residents of Poinguinim have decided to stage a protest on Thursday morning. The protest is being organised to coincide with the government’s decision to send a team to survey the area under police protection.
Neura local accused of assault
PANJIM: One Francis Noronha and his brother Carlos Noronha have complained to Agassaim police that one Albert Lourenco of Church waddo, Neura-o-Grande, had trespassed into their property, verbally abused their caretaker Jose Gonsalves and his wife, thereafter attacked and severely injured them on the head with an iron hammer. The brother duo has also alleged in their complaint that Albert Lourenco’s wife too trespassed into their property and verbally abused their caretaker and his wife.
45-yr-old man commits suicide
COLLEM: A 45-year-old man from Kajumal in Sangod-Mollem allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to a cashew tree on Wednesday morning. According to Collem police, the deceased, Agostin Santan Gomes, took his own life very close to his house. Police has sent the body to GMC hospital for an autopsy and is investigating the case.
Chain snatcher nabbed
DABOLIM: Vasco Police on Wednesday evening arrested Uday Pandey of Bihar in connection with an assault and a bid to rob a chain from a woman.
According to Vasco Police, Zarina Yusuf Banu of Headland Sada, complained that when she was on her way to her mother’s house at Pixem Dongri in Vasco, a person caught her and threw her down near the State Bank of India at Vasco. Banu said after throwing her down the person tried to snatch her mangalsutra, but some eyewitnesses rushed to her aid and nabbed him. The crowd gave a sound trashing to the man, before handing him over to the Vasco police. The accused, later identified by police as Uday Pandey of Bihar, was arrested under Section 356 read with 511 of IPC. Vasco PSI Harish Gawas is investigating the case.
Mobile phone stolen
MARGAO: Unknown accused committed theft of HTC mobile phone worth Rs 42,000 at the Margao Konkan Railway Station. In a complaint to the Konkan Railway police, Sharan Mohan of Bangalore stated the incident occurred when she at platform number one boarding the Vasco-Bangalore train. An offence under section 379 of IPC has been registered.
Hero Honda motorcycle theft
MARGAO: A Hero Honda Splendour motorcycle (GA-08-H-5552), worth Rs 35,000, was stolen from an open place near the KTC bus stand at Margao. Anant Gunaji, resident of Fatorda and owner of the stolen two-wheeler in a complaint filed with the Margao police stated that on November 19 at 8.15 am he had parked the motorcycle near the KTC bus stand and when he returned in the evening he found it missing.
One held for two-wheeler theft
MARGAO: Margao police arrested Sagar Naik of Vasco for theft of Activa scooter on a complaint from Sagar Damodar Priolkar, Konkan railway station, Margao. Offence under section 379 of IPC is registered against Naik. Priolkar in his complaint on November 26 accused Naik of committing theft of the scooter between November 19 and 20. Further investigation is being carried out by ASI C G Velip.
Bus driver booked for rash driving
MARGAO: Maina-Curtorim police have registered an offence under section 279, 338 of IPC for rash and negligent driving endangering human life against Yakub Sayyed of Sanguem, driver of a mini bus. HC Ramesh Harijan of
Maina-Curtorim police station in his complaint has stated that Sayyed who was proceeding from Margao to Pirla on reaching MES swimming pool gate at Dicarpali dashed against a Mahindra Flyte scooter as a result of which rider Jennifer Alphonso suffered grievous injuries.
17 malaria cases at Bicholm PHC
BICHOLIM: The Bicholim PHC has detected about 17 malaria cases in the city, after a health check-up was conducted by the hospital. Health officer Dr Medha Salkar informed that 12 of the 17 patients, who have been declared positive for malaria, are labourers working at a construction site in Housing Board Colony, while the other patients are from Sashtiwada in Bordem-Bicholim. According to Dr Salkar, the PHC has already taken the initiative to curb malaria in Bicholim and a house-to-house malaria awareness campaign is being conducted with the help of local councillors. “There is nothing to panic as the situation is under control and we are keeping a close watch over the situation,” said Dr Salkar.
