 Herald scribe conferred award 

PANJIM: Directorate of Art and Culture has conferred ‘Kala Gaurav Puraskar’ for the year 2013-14 on Herald Correspondent Anil Shankhwalker in recognition of his contribution to literature.
The Directorate of Art and Culture recently conferred the Kala Gaurav Puraskars on 50 artistes, who have made significant contribution in the field of art and culture.
Anil Shankhwalker, recipient of Kala Puraskar, has written six books – five in Konknni, ‘Morpisam’, ‘Chit’t Mojhem Add’ddota, Aikolam?’, ‘Lharram’ and ‘Pasoi’ and one in English ‘Impressions’.
He has also presented 18 documentaries on Goa Doordarshan on various subjects and has written one Telefilm ‘Mhaddhuk Jhor Yeta’. Besides, he has contributed articles on social subjects to Marathi and Konkani dailies and magazines. He was the member of the advisory committee of Akashwani for two consecutive years.
BJP inaugurates office at Corlim 
OLD GOA: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar opened the BJP’s office for Cumbarjua constituency at Dulapi-Corlim on Friday.
Speaking later, Parrikar urged the gathering to attend Narendra Modi’s Vijay Sankalp rally in large numbers just like the way they have turned up for the office opening.
Also present on the occasion were State BJP president Vinay Tendulkar, former MLA Sadanand Shet Tanavade, BJP members and supporters.
‘Village women have ability to work hard’

CHORAO: Deputy Speaker Anant Shet said village women should financially support their family through self help groups. He was speaking during the 2nd anniversary celebration of Kapreshwar Self Help Group, Karabhat-Chorao.
Speaking further, Shet said village women have the ability to work hard. “If somebody gives the direction and guidance, women from the village can do wonders,” he said and appealed the women to take benefits of government schemes to achieve their targets.
Artist Amita Salatri and social worker Chitra Shirsagar, the special invitees, appealed the women to work hard to achieve targets to get financially well sound.
Other present were local panch Salvador Fernandes, Jai Hanuman Self Group President S Haldankar, Bhajan artist Madhusudan Thali and Kapreshwar President Hema Surlakar. On the occasion, Bhajan contest, singing and cooking contests were organized.

PORVORIM: Career Information Day will be organised at St Thomas Higher Secondary School, Aldona, on January 25.
Interested institutions and colleges, which had earlier requested to speak to the students of St Thomas HSS (XI-XII) of Arts, Commerce, Science and Vocational courses like Catering and Restaurant management (CRM), Health care Assistant (HCA), Auditing and Accountancy may contact St Thomas HSS office, Aldona, during school hours.
Others too who are interested to speak to the students community on careers are welcome. To organise better, the presentation will be done on first come first served basis, states the press note.
Chicalim crib bags first place
DABOLIM: The Chicalim crib prepared by the Friends of Chicalim bagged the first place at the All Goa Crib competition organised by Department of Art and Culture.
The Chicalim crib was prepared for the first time by the Friends of Chicalim led by Seby Periera and Agustino Mesquita. Borda crib got the second place, while Holy Cross, Sanvordem, had to settle for the third place.
Speaking to Herald, Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho said: “We are extremely happy as the hard work of Friends of Chicalim bore the fruits. This is youthful energy generalised in a nice manner for something fantastic and done it for the first time and won it.”
Godinho complemented the group, which irrespective of their religion came together to create the crib depicting the Nativity scene. He added that the amount awarded as the prize amount is too less for the efforts of the boys and the creation of the crib.
One Cedric said the whole artistry is unbelievable and it’s is very admirable that the villagers have done it and not by trained artists. “We feel very proud of it as we belong to the Chicalim village,” he added.
