Banned drugs

The Union Health Ministry has reportedly banned 350 Fixed Dose Combination (FDC) drugs after an expert committee found them unsafe for human consumption.

The banned drugs include popular cough syrups, cough suppressants, anti-diabetic drugs and pain killers. What is surprising is that it took the government so many years to ban these drugs when people, specially, children have been taking the cough syrups and cough suppressants for decades. Adults could have probably been taking the anti-diabetic drugs and pain killers regularly for several years. Why were these drugs not banned earlier? Not banning the drugs earlier could have probably affected the health of the consumers in the past.
Many of us have grown up probably taking these popular cough medicines prescribed by the doctors over the years. Some of these popular brands are now reportedly in the list of banned drugs. Has our health been affected? If so who is responsible for it? It is also understood that 500 more FDCs are under scrutiny and many them could also be banned in the near future.
The retailers in the state have reportedly stopped selling the drugs which have been banned. However it would be in the fitness of things for the government to make public the list of drugs which have been banned so that the general public are in the know of the brand names of the banned drugs. There could be many people who have stocked the medicines at home, specially, the anti-diabetic drugs and pain-killers to be used over a period of time. Such patients should immediately visit their doctors and ask for a change of the long-term medicines if they have been banned. The doctors and hospitals too need to be in the know of the list of banned drugs so that they do not prescribe them to the patients inadvertently.
The Medical Representatives of the Pharmaceutical companies that manufacture the drugs that are now banned need to keep the doctors informed of these banned drugs. There was a hue and cry when Maggie noodles was found to contain Lead beyond the permissible limit and the popular food product was banned. It must however be said that drugs which have detrimental effect on the health of the consumer can be more harmful.
