Proof of Heaven

Maria Gracias
I refer to Dr. Francisco Colaco’s article ‘Proof of Heaven’ (Herald, 13 June). I am in awe of Dr. Colaco’s writings in your esteemed publication and I read every word written in his articles. He is also a reputed Cardiologist. I remember 5 years back one of the famous hospitals in South Goa advised immediate angiography for my husband. My husband panicked and I took him to Dr. Colaco. Doctor saw his reports and said “We just cannot disturb the vessels of the heart, control his cholesterol level with medicines and diet”. Till today we have not done the angiogram.
I am 4 years away from retirement. Dr. Colaco’s writing on Melvin brought tears to my eyes also and memories of many years back flashed across my mind. I had just joined the Bank as a clerk in Panjim and used to travel from Raia to Panjim everyday. We were young and a pack of 7 boys and 2 girls travelling to Panjim sitting on the last 7 seater of a Kadamba express bus. We used to make a lot of noise behind that people in the bus would get annoyed with us. We also used to pay half ticket pretending to be students. Though Melvin rode a bike many times he would come on the same bus and sit on the seat in front of us. But he was different. He was very young, handsome, jovial and had a beautiful nature and if alive today would have been a very good doctor. After his death everything became quite in the bus. I also changed my route and travelled via Loutolim. I did not attend his funeral as I wanted to remember him as a young lad in the bus.
I can understand Dr. Colaco’s feelings. They say time is a greatest healer but I say God is the greatest healer. The Holy Spirit is the greatest comforter. The Holy Spirit comforts Dr. Colaco as he stays very close to the church named after the Holy Spirit. The hymn goes like this” Oh Oh Oh Heaven is in my heart”. If heaven is in your heart doctor, God is in your heart and if God is in your heart, Melvin is in your heart. Dr. Colaco’s song on his son is also well appreciated.
Though it is a mystery to believe the saying “God takes the best”, we must remember God gave His Best. He gave His Son Jesus to us in whom we believe and who we will see in all His Glory when we reach Heaven.
