Increasingly one finds difficult to give as the receivers of late are few and choosy because of economic improvement. It is not that beggars have decreased, but begging has become sophisticated and professional. Children are trafficked, maimed in an attempt to professional begging. The Christians in particular are more inclined and disposed towards charity during the season and obliged to part with certain percentage of income. The aim of giving, generosity, magnanimity is inner call to assist those in need and a gracious act of self denial. It also ensures the welfare of the less unfortunate, marginalised socially disadvantaged. Then there are gapping reasons in society divided between extreme poverty and affluence. Income tax offers sops for regulated donations and charity. The joy of giving motivates and sublimates towards these charitable dispositions. Fake NGO’s are also operating, capitalizing on the sentiment towards charity.
Those neglected, destitute are victims seeking succor for sustenance. In order to discourage public begging legislations are in place discouraging this activity. Giving is also propaganda material for individuals and establishments to be seen as angels of concerns, “Let you left hand not know, what your right hand does”, “Give and you shall receive” screams a Bible lines, stressing there by anonymity of giving to those not even remotely connected, publicity is its own reward. Public display of charity can be humiliating, touching low self respect and resentment. The receiver of aid gives pleasure to the donor by acceptance. Acceptance of gifts need not necessarily implies, need, greed for acquisition but acceptance definitely enhances the feelings of joy of the donor. Giving depends on excess, disposable income to spare, may not necessarily be rooted on religious tenets to be recognised as philanthropist in the esteem of the society. Charity can also be viewed as giving back to the society in gratitude.
On the other hand donors buy new goods for distributions in kinds. Giving must hurt a little bit,must be seen as a sacrifice. Donors find it convenient in donating cash, but giving of spare time, concerns, feelings is to be most appreciated. Visits to hospitals, prisons, old age, participating in literacy movements is giving without expectations and much more demanding. Govt now a days runs residential facilities for elders, orphans, as its commitment towards social responsibility and political outreach.
