Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has said that several issues at the heart of the nationwide student protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) had already been raised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi through his Chhatron Ki Goonj (Voice of Students) campaign.
Speaking at the 15th anniversary celebrations of the India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) in Mumbai, Tharoor said the Congress had highlighted similar concerns months before they became central to the CJP’s agitation.

“Interestingly, the issues taken up by the CJP were something my party took up, Rahul Gandhi took up with Chhatron Ki Goonj,” Tharoor said during a conversation with IIMUN founder Rishabh Shah.
Tharoor, however, acknowledged that the Congress campaign failed to generate the same level of public response as the subsequent student protests.
“But we have to see why it did not resonate as much. We need to have a finger on the pulse of the people,” he said.
The discussion took place during IIMUN’s anniversary event, where Shah also interviewed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday.
Tharoor’s remarks highlight the Congress’ contention that several issues later taken up by student protesters had already featured in its political outreach, while also acknowledging the party’s challenge in connecting those concerns with a wider section of the public.
