Mumbai middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan finds himself on the outside looking in after being left out of India’s squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The decision underscores growing uncertainty regarding his long-term future in the national setup, despite an outstanding domestic record and a recent physical transformation.
Following the squad announcement, Sarfaraz shared a cryptic story on Instagram featuring a still from the 2019 sports-drama film Jersey, accompanied by the caption: “I may not fit in, but I’ll fight with everything I’ve got.” The post reflects the frustration of a batter who boasts a First-Class average of 64.73 across 62 matches, yet remains unable to secure a sustained run in the Test XI.

Sarfaraz last represented India in November 2024 during the home series against New Zealand, where his maiden Test century was a rare highlight during a 3-0 series defeat. Although he was retained in the squad for the subsequent 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and later traveled with the India A team to England, he failed to feature in any Test matches during that period.
In response to persistent criticism surrounding his conditioning, Sarfaraz underwent a dramatic physical transformation, shedding weight and improving his overall agility. He reinforced his credentials during the 2026 Indian Premier League season after being signed by Chennai Super Kings, scoring 161 runs at a strike rate of 169.47, including two half-centuries. However, neither his enhanced fitness nor his aggressive short-format form proved sufficient to convince selectors to reinstate him for the upcoming red-ball assignments.
