Why has the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) not yet confirmed India’s proposed tour of Bangladesh despite continued communication between the two cricket boards? The major hurdle appears to be government clearance, which is yet to be granted.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been making efforts to host the Indian team for the long-delayed men’s cricket tour. The two boards remain in regular contact, but there is still no confirmation from the BCCI regarding whether the series will go ahead.

The tour was originally scheduled for mid-2025 but was postponed amid a sharp deterioration in political relations between India and Bangladesh. While both cricket boards officially cited political circumstances for the postponement, officials had indicated that tensions between the two governments were a major factor.
Relations remained strained for several months. During the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, concerns were raised in India over reports of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, while Dhaka also strengthened its engagement with Pakistan. These developments added further complications to India-Bangladesh relations.
The situation later became more complicated following the controversy involving Bangladesh cricketer Mustafizur Rahman during the 2025 Indian Premier League and subsequent disagreements surrounding the 2026 men’s T20 World Cup. Bangladesh eventually withdrew from the tournament shortly before it began.
A change in Bangladesh’s political landscape was followed by changes within the BCB. Newly appointed BCB president Tamim Iqbal has reportedly been pushing for improved sporting and diplomatic relations with India.
A September window has also been identified for a possible white-ball series between the two teams, with the proposed schedule coming shortly before the Asian Games. However, the tour cannot be finalised without the necessary clearance from the Indian government.
“We are working on it and will seek permission and clarity as far as the Bangladesh tour is concerned,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying.
The source added that the cricket board could not take a decision independently at this stage and would approach the government for further clarity.
The BCCI source also confirmed that communication with the BCB has continued.
“The BCB has written to us and they are in constant touch with us. Soon there will be more clarity,” the source said.
With the proposed September window approaching, the government’s decision will be crucial in determining whether India travels to Bangladesh.
If the tour does not receive clearance or the two sides are unable to finalise an arrangement, India could instead explore an alternative series. The BCCI is reportedly in discussions with Afghanistan over the possibility of playing a few white-ball matches in Delhi during the same window.
For now, however, India’s Bangladesh tour remains unconfirmed, with government approval emerging as the key factor that could determine whether the long-postponed series finally takes place.
