WhatsApp users across several countries reported disruptions on Monday, with the outage primarily affecting the sharing of photos, videos, stickers, GIFs and other multimedia content.
According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, reports of problems began emerging early Monday. Around 41% of reported issues were related to messaging, 40% to the WhatsApp app and 13% to notifications.
While text messages continued to work for some users, many reported difficulties uploading and sending multimedia files. Photos and videos were reportedly taking longer than usual to send or remained stuck during the upload process.
Some users said images appeared in chats but remained stuck while uploading, while others encountered loading icons or prompts asking them to retry. Stickers and GIFs were also reportedly affected, suggesting that the disruption may have been linked specifically to WhatsApp’s multimedia services.
The issue was reported in several countries, including India, the United Kingdom, France, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Spain and Colombia, indicating that the problem was not confined to a single region.
The widespread nature of the complaints suggested that the disruption may have been broader than a local network or device-related issue. However, the exact scale of the outage and the number of affected users were not immediately known.
Several users attempted routine troubleshooting measures, including restarting their smartphones, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data and reinstalling the application. However, many said these steps failed to resolve the issue, particularly when trying to upload photos and videos.
Downdetector also showed reports of WhatsApp service issues on Sunday.
WhatsApp had not issued an official statement regarding the reported disruption at the time of writing.
