When Donald Trump entered the race for the White House this time, many sneered at him and ridiculed his chances of even getting through the opening rounds (perhaps, I was also innocently amongst these unbelievers). However, he has proved all his detractors wrong, and today commands the highest position in the world’s foremost economy, and whether we like it or not, commands the respect accorded to that position… Mr President.
His methods are being criticised each day, and he certainly is not everyone’s ideal President, however, he has demonstrated grit and mettle beyond belief! Most politicians, especially at this crucial juncture of elections in many States of India (Goa included), land upon our doorstep uninvited, with folded hands, and make wild promises – promises that they certainly do not believe in fulfilling if elected, and we fools believing that they somehow may! With Trump, however, what he promised he has already started fulfilling, and I am cent percent certain that he will carry them out to completion. He is able to walk the talk, demonstrate political will, and he just shrugs off the disdain upon his Presidency. Indian politicians, I am sorry to say, are gutless when it comes to this aspect of courage!
One of the primary and most far-reaching poll promises he made was to ‘Keep America Safe’, and he has started by banning entry to people from 7 identified nations that have a history of terrorism. Yes. I understand the wisdom, pros and the cons of whether this will actually solve the terrorism problem in the world, especially America, but at least it’s a start! What the European leaders have done so far is to open the floodgates to increased terrorism on their doorstep, and they are certainly paying the price for their foolishness! Being aggressive is not always good, but sometimes it pays dividends, and Trump and his administration will reap the benefits in the long haul. I’m certain he will serve a double term, like Barack Obama whom I also admired, but Barack failed miserably in stemming the tide of terrorist incidents upon the very same people who may have elected him to office!
In the short time allotted to him to follow through on his poll promises, Trump will crush ISIS as he promised (Baghdadi beware!), he will ensure safety for the Israelis, for Americans, for Middle East and Syrian Christians, and perhaps even for India. Can the Church in India lay claim to such achievements even after Dancing with Democracy for nearly 4 centuries?
