The Maharashtra Assembly election results have reignited a longstanding debate on the credibility of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), with opposition parties questioning their integrity. As the Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising Congress, Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, suffered a resounding defeat, accusations of EVM tampering resurfaced.
This time, the chorus of doubts reached new levels, with Sharad Pawar forming a committee to explore legal avenues to challenge the results. Yet, despite the political storm brewing, the Supreme Court has dismissed calls for reverting to traditional ballot paper voting, effectively closing the door on this line of attack.

In the aftermath of the Maharashtra Assembly election results, the Opposition has expressed its disbelief at the scale of the BJP’s victory. The Mahayuti (BJP-led alliance) won a decisive 230 of the 288 seats, far exceeding expectations. The MVA, however, had hoped for a different outcome.
Despite intense campaigning from leaders like Sharad Pawar, who even appealed to defeat Ajit Pawar’s every candidate, the alliance could not secure a majority.
Opposition leaders, unable to reconcile with the results, have resorted to questioning the role of EVMs, accusing them of being tampered with to ensure the BJP’s dominance.
Sharad Pawar’s decision to form a committee to probe the issue highlights the depth of frustration within the MVA. The committee aims to gather evidence and mount a legal challenge to the election results. Such concerns have been echoed by other MVA leaders, who point to the high voter turnout and the one-sided nature of the victory as proof of possible tampering.
The allegations against EVMs are not new. Ever since their introduction, many opposition parties, except the BJP, have raised concerns about their vulnerability to manipulation.
During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, there was a surge in petitions to the Election Commission, with over a lakh requests to return to paper ballots.
However, the Supreme Court has repeatedly rejected such calls, citing a lack of concrete evidence. In its latest ruling, the Court dismissed a petition filed by Dr K A Paul, with the judges admonishing petitioners for their Inconsistent stance. They pointed out the hypocrisy in claims of EVM tampering, noting that those who win elections see EVMs as trustworthy, while those who lose point to tampering. The Court’s dismissal underscores the judiciary’s stance on this issue—without hard evidence, there is little ground for legal intervention.
Despite these setbacks, the opposition continues to question the legitimacy of the electoral process. Leaders from the MVA have pointed to what they see as inexplicable voting patterns, with some alleging that entire villages experienced voting irregularities. The speculation over the accuracy of the results has become so intense that even members of the NCP ( Sharad Pawar) have raised concerns over what they perceive as suspicious voting outcomes. However, these assertions remain unsubstantiated, and the credibility of such claims remains highly questionable.
As for the ruling alliance, the result marks a clear victory for the BJP and its partners. The election outcome was largely attributed to a well-executed electoral strategy that included effective micro-planning and promises like the “Ladki Bahin” schemes, which appealed to key voter segments. The BJP’s success, despite the perceived anti-incumbency sentiment, speaks to its ability to galvanize support even in a challenging political landscape.
While the MVA grapples with its defeat and the EVM controversy, the BJP, led by Devendra Phadnavis, is set to take the reins in Maharashtra once again. Phadnavis is poised to be sworn in as Chief Minister, with the possibility of Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar securing the Deputy Chief Minister posts. Shinde’s shift from Shiv Sena to the BJP and his role in the alliance underscores the complex and often contentious dynamics within Maharashtra’s political landscape. Despite the opposition’s doubts, the BJP is clearly in control, and its strategy seems to have paid off in this election.
