Swatantra Bhardwaj Detained In UP Over Alleged Jantar Mantar Assault

Self-styled influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj was detained in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday in connection with the alleged assault of Sanjay Kumar, father of student activist Nishu Aazad, during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

Police said Bhardwaj allegedly attempted to escape after being detained but was subsequently caught. His detention came amid mounting pressure on Delhi Police, with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) staging a protest outside the Parliament Street police station demanding his arrest.

The controversy erupted after a viral video of an interview in which Bhardwaj allegedly appeared to claim that he had attacked Kumar during the July 20 protest. Protesters have demanded stronger charges, including attempt to murder and provisions of the SC/ST Act.

Delhi Police, however, has disputed claims that Kumar suffered a skull fracture, stating that he sustained a simple head injury during a scuffle. Police said further investigation will determine whether an attempt-to-murder charge is warranted.

Nishu has also alleged that she faced threats and abuse following her complaint over the incident. Police have said the investigation is ongoing.
