PANJIM: Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) in 2016 booked 11 offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act against public servants and politicians, filed two chargesheets in court and got a conviction in one case against a former Mamlatdar.
The special court had convicted former Ponda Mamlatdar Prashant Mandrekar in a bribery case registered in 2005. Mandrekar, then Ponda Mamladar was caught on April 28, 2005, by Anti-Corruption Branch accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from one Thomas Menezes, Managing Director of Oceanic Aqua Culture Pvt Ltd.
ACB was able to file two chargesheets in the court. In the first case the then chief officer of Pernem Municipal Council K D Halarnkar and in second a clerk of Ponda Sub Registrar were charged under Prevention of Corruption Act and are being prosecuted in court.
In the list of 11 corruption cases registered last year at ACB, the major cases includes the recent offence against AAP chief ministerial face Elvis Gomes who was then a senior officer of the government of Goa. He was booked along with former Housing minister Nilkanth Halarnkar.
The second FIR filed against a former politician was Churchill Alemao for illegally purchasing water tanks during his tenure as PWD minister.
ACB has also registered a FIR under the Prevention of Corruption Act against former minister Dayanand Narvekar and a few other directors of the Info Tech Corporation for carrying our works at various locations in Succor illegally.
ACB booked four trap cases in which public servants were caught accepting bribes. Two cases were booked in which Sakhalim Municipal Chief Officer Sripad Arlekar and Police Sub Inspector Vikram Naik were trapped through an audio recording.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Bossuet Silva (ACB) said ACB will shortly file a chargesheet in another two trap cases in which Head Clerk of Mapusa Assistant Director of Transport Naresh Narvekar and LDC Meena Tuekar were caught accepting bribes.
