MAPUSA: A team of jail staff led by the Jailor conducted a surprise search in block 3 of Colvale jail and seized 12 smartphones, 1 feature phone, 1 power bank, 1 mobile battery, 3 wireless headphones and 7 mobile chargers.
As per sources, the surprise search was conducted on directions of the Inspector General (IG) Prisons.
The jail authorities will initiate legal action against the prisoners who were found in possession of the items.
It is learnt that the convicts at the jail often smuggle the dismantled parts of the phones in their underwear when they are taken to court or hospitals. It is alleged that the parts of the phones are well hidden in the washrooms much before by the partners in crime of the accused from where the accused conceal it in their undergarments.
Police on condition of anonymity stated that mobile jammers in jail is the need of the hour.
