OLD GOA, JUNE 8
The 12-year-old Corlim panchayat building is falling apart and panchas have decided to shift into the old panchayat hall and to appoint a technical consultant in a bid to renovate the Corlim panchayat building.
The panchas at the recent fortnightly panchayat meeting have passed a resolution to appoint engineer Paresh Gaitonde as technical consultant and take his advice on structural safety and renovation of the panchayat building situated in Corlim.
It may be recalled that on May 3, 2010, a portion of concrete slab in Talathi’s room collapsed. Luckily, no one was injured in the incident, as no one was present in the room at the time of incident.
It may be recalled that the panchayat building, which was constructed under Rural and Development Agency scheme, was inaugurated on October 2, 1998, but due to poor and haphazard construction and water proofing works, there was water leakage, due to which the steel got corroded.
The resolution to this effect was proposed by former sarpanch and Panch Joao B Lobo and seconded by Sarpanch Sisto Fernandes, who informed that the entire panchayat building has become dangerous due to weakening of RCC roof slab.
Speaking to Herald, Corlim Panchayat Secretary Basilio Pires said: “The panchas and employees working in the panchayat building have expressed fears of the roof slab.”
“There is an urgent need for repairs of the entire panchayat building. I cannot understand what type of work was carried out by the contractor, who had built the building, which has started to come down within 11 years of its existence,” said Pires
“With the monsoon started, the panchayat members have decided to ask Paresh Gaitonde to inspect the building and give his opinion and report whether the RCC slab of the building is safe and what steps are needed to be taken to renovate the building,” added Pires.
The panchas have also decided to ask Gaitonde to give his recommendation regarding the renovation work to be undertaken for recasting the entire slab and taking up columns from outside supporting the slab.
“During the renovation work, the panchayat office could be shifted to the nearby panchayat hall,” he added.
