MAPUSA: In a major fire reported on New Year’ Day, 15 temporary structures were gutted while a four-wheeler and a scooter were partially damaged at Gaurawado, Calangute.

According to sources, of the 15 structures, 14 selling garments and ornaments and a tea stall were gutted at 3.30 am.
After receiving information about the fire incident, the Pilerne Fire Station team rushed to the spot. Initially, the quick response vehicle reached the spot followed by another vehicle. Since the fire was out of control, the Mapusa Fire Station was called as reinforcement.
It took over two hours for the fire fighting teams to bring the fire under control.
The fire team first removed the three LPG cylinders from the tea stall.
A rented car and scooter parked near the stalls were partially damaged in the fire. The property is owned by one Fernandes family which had given the shops on rent. The shop owners claimed to have incurred a loss to the tune of Rs one crore. The exact cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.
The Pilerne Fire Station will write to the Electricity Department and local police to investigate and ascertain the exact cause of fire.
Meanwhile, few days ago, the owner had an argument with someone and suspects that person purposely set the shops on fire.
