One serious after assault 

MARGAO: One person was critically injured and was rushed to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, in an attempt to murder case at Davorlim on Saturday evening.

Maina-Curtorim police station in-charge, PI Gurudas Kadam said the victim Altaf Nandihali sustained critical injuries after being assaulted with an iron rod. Another person, who was also injured in the incident, is convalescing at the Hospicio Hospital. PI Kadam said the incident occurred this evening at Davorlim when a group of 4-5 persons came in a vehicle and attacked Altaf with iron rods. He attributed the motive behind the assault to a marital dispute between husband and wife. Replying to a question, PI Kadam said the police would register a case of attempt to murder.

Student dies in accident 

BORIM: A student of the Industrial Training Institute at Farmagudi died on the spot on Saturday evening after he met with an accident at Undir-Bandora. According to Police, the incident occurred when Chandresh Pokale was proceeding from his home to Ponda on a bike (GA-05-H 5456) when he was knocked down by a private bus (GA-05-T-9955) contracted by one company from Usgao. The accident occurred barely 200 metres from his house. 

Breach of trust case registered 

MARGAO: Margao police have registered a case of breach of trust after gold ornaments and gold worth Rs 18.40 lakh went missing from a Goa-bound bus.

The police said the case has been registered against both the drivers of the bus, the cleaner and two other people in connection with the case. The incident is believed to have occurred on the intervening day of February 9 and 10 when the bus arrived at the new KTC bus stand. The five persons have been charged for criminal breach of trust following a complaint lodged by the complainant, Piyush Sampat (48), a resident of Ambaji, Chandrawado, Fatorda.

Forgery case booked  

MARGAO: Margao police on Saturday registered a case of cheating and forgery against five persons following a complaint lodged by one Silvestre Niasso, a resident of Davorlim.

Police said the five accused persons with common intention allegedly prepared a forged power of attorney in the name of the relatives of the complainant with regards to a property.

The police further alleged that the five accused prepared a forged deed of sale in respect of the property and sold the same to a real-estate developer by using the Power of Attorney as genuine. The deed of sale was later presented as genuine before the Sub-Registrar. 

‘Avishkar 2013’ held 

PANJIM: ‘Avishkar 2013’, the annual gathering of Pragati Women’s College of Sarvodaya Shikshan Sanstha, Torshem-Pernem was recently celebrated at the college premises. 

Noted TV personality Amita Salatry who was the chief guest, spoke on ‘women’s empowerment’. 

She was felicitated for her outstanding performance in the field of TV, acting and social work by Mr S S Mumbaikar. 

The students presented an entertainment programme, which was based on Indian culture. Principal Kishori Mestry welcomed. Mr V K Patil proposed the vote of thanks. Torshem Sarpanch Vilas Shetye and former Sarpanch Prarthna Motte were also present.

Torch of Learning flagged off

PANJIM: DIG Dr O P Mishra flagged off the ‘Torch of Learning’, an initiative by Mount Litera Zee School (MLZS) to spread the message of inclusive education. 

The ‘Torch of Learning’ bus will travel across India, with a demo classroom, to bring awareness about the different styles of learning. 

Mount Litera Zee School’s ‘Torch of Learning’, which is an innovative approach towards education development in India, will travel across India for over 3 months to spread the message of inclusive education. The bus has a demo classroom, to give an experience to students, parents and educators, about the ideal classroom setting as per each students learning style. The demo classroom will showcase a typical classroom in Mount Litera Zee School. The parents will get an opportunity to experience how a classroom can contribute towards creating future leaders. 

The bus will travel across 35 cities in India to create awareness about different styles of learning. 

Red & Black dance held

PANJIM: As part of the centenary celebration Clube Nacional’s traditional Carnaval ‘Red & Black’ dance was organised below the Clube premises. 

Goa’s top most bands ~ Tidal Wave, Cascades, L’Ace and Syndicate performed on the occasion. The clube’s 100th anniversary Souvenir was released by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in the presence of George Mascarenhas, Shantaram Naik, Vaidehi Naik (CCP Mayor), Francis Noronha, Tomas Machado, Tony Rodrigues (CCP Dy Mayor), Tony Dias and Arlette Campos.

IQRA English School gathering

PANJIM: The annual gathering of IQRA English School Sirvodem-Khareband-Margao was held at Ravindra Bhavan hall, Margao recently. President and Founder member of Asharaful Bannat, Janab Tahir Carol was the chief guest, while Abdul Wahdud was the guest of honour. Children performed various programmes ~ dances, takreer and hamd/naat on the occasion. Chairman of Al-Falah Education Society, Abdul Rehman Khan welcomed. The annual report was read by the Headmistress Martha Fernandes and proficiency prizes were distributed. Reshma Shaikh was the programme in-charge. Sharifa compered, while Rihana proposed the vote of thanks. National Anthem marked the conclusion of the programme.

Lecture on veneers for dentists

Memorial service for Calvim victims

PANJIM: There will be memorial service for the repose of the souls of Priyal Salgaonkar, Diana Dias, Elvina Dias, Nigel Gracias, Josephine Dias and Dayanand Hoble on February17, at 4:30pm at Calvim Ferry point. The service is organised by St Rita Chapel, Carona as a mark of respect on the occasion of the First Death Anniversary which is on February18.

Conference on Panchayati Raj 

PANJIM: The Department of Political Science, Goa University, in collaboration with Directorate of Panchayats, will organise a two-day seminar on ‘50 years of Panchayati Raj in Goa: Retrospect and Prospects’ at the Seminar hall of Arts faculty building, Goa University on February 18 and 19. The conference will be inaugurated by Narendra Sawaiker, Chairman of Goa State Law Commission. The conference will be attended by eminent academicians, panchayat members, activists and legal experts to discuss the challenges and potentials of PRIs in Goa, particularly with regard to the developmental concerns in the state.
